"The ideal society is not one where conflict is absent or challenges are eliminated; rather, it is one where individuals are free to address these challenges through peaceful, voluntary means." Voluntary action rooted in mutual consent is a requirement for human flourishing. When individuals are free to make their own choices, innovation becomes possible, new ideas can be discovered, and meaningful collaboration creates better outcomes for everyone. Only by respecting individual dignity and limiting coercive power, can we create a world where people thrive, not just survive.? What role does consent play in shaping a thriving society? IHS supports professors to promote the teaching and research of classical liberal ideas, and encourages open inquiry.
关于我们
The Institute for Humane Studies supports and partners with professors to promote the teaching and research of classical liberal ideas, and to advance higher education’s core purpose of intellectual discovery and human progress. At IHS, we believe the principles of the classical liberal tradition – including individual liberty and responsibility, limited government, economic freedom, the rule of law, free speech, and open inquiry – are the foundation of a just, peaceful, and prosperous world. We believe for those ideas to take root, they must be taught, explored, and challenged in higher education. That’s why IHS has built the foremost network of scholars across the country who are researching and teaching classical liberal ideas. We are a partner throughout their academic careers, offering guidance, resources, and access to a passionate, supportive community. -We facilitate the impact of professors both on and beyond their campuses, convening them to advance their research and partnering with them to run campus programs for students. -We support future professors. Each year, IHS awards more than $1 million in fellowships to hundreds of students from around the world. In addition, we offer an integrated suite of academic career programs including mentoring, research grants, research-development seminars, online resources, and placement support. -Through our work with faculty, we inspire and educate college students. We partner together to offer students intensive summer seminars and on-campus programs throughout the year. From the student just beginning to develop an interest in classical liberal ideas, to the established professor, IHS is a champion for each individual’s intellectual journey – and together we are partners for a free and open society.

Occupational licensing laws affect millions of workers, often barring qualified individuals from jobs due to outdated regulations. A recent study by Darwyyn Deyo and Liam Sigaud highlights how Illinois’ 2017 reforms—which eased restrictions on licensing for individuals with criminal records—had tangible economic and social benefits. The results? More employment, higher household incomes, and a reduction in property crime, particularly in Cook County. However, Illinois still lags behind neighboring states like Indiana and Iowa in making licensing laws more equitable. Policymakers should take note: reducing barriers to work is an effective strategy for increasing economic opportunity and public safety. Read the full piece: https://archive.ph/0erSZ

In a time of rapid change and uncertainty, we need to pay attention to what KIND of uncertainty we're facing. There's the good kind, the kind of uncertainty that comes from living in a dynamic, innovative society. Then there's the other kind... regime uncertainty... when the rules of the game can change on a whim. The markets this morning weighed in on the bad kind. Also, see my recent Persuasion piece that covers this topic. https://lnkd.in/eriEDmXG

What happens when businesses can’t plan for the future? Uncertainty doesn’t just rattle confidence—it stifles innovation and progress. "Regime uncertainty"—the unpredictable swings in policies, tariffs, and executive actions—creates instability that drives investors away and leaves businesses in limbo. Without clear, consistent governance, economic growth falters, opportunities disappear, and communities bear the cost. ?? Economic freedom fuels both prosperity and liberty. In the classical liberal tradition, economic freedom is not just a driver of innovation—it’s a safeguard against coercion. Friedrich Hayek’s knowledge problem reveals why decentralized markets succeed where central planning fails. Meanwhile, history shows that societies with strong property rights and free markets are more free overall. When individuals control their economic choices, they are less vulnerable to government overreach. But when the state dominates the economy, dissent becomes dangerous. Economic freedom disperses power, creating the foundation for individual autonomy. Dive into this IHS piece exploring why free markets are essential for human flourishing: https://lnkd.in/esxt6y2S
