The Guide to Cement-Stabilized Subgrade Soils offers the latest advances in the use of portland cement to improve the properties of subgrade soils for various infrastructure applications. Cement-stabilized subgrade “is a more economical and sustainable alternative than removing and replacing unstable or expansive untreated soils. It reduces not only costs but also construction time,” said Jerod Gross of Snyder & Associates and an author of the guide. Many countermeasures for scour are a costly investment for Iowa counties with limited budgets, and the least expensive method tends to require more maintenance and thus continual costs. A recent research project by the Bridge Engineering Center (BEC) studied an economical and effective alternative. “Partially grouted revetments have the potential to be an affordable and effective countermeasure for scour. The comparatively higher costs of installing partially grouted versus loose riprap are offset by the improved stability and resilience of the revetment over time,” said BEC Researcher Dr. Brent Phares, who was principal investigator on the seven-year project. https://lnkd.in/giBixdqK

If you have ever used the Traffic Signal Timing Manual (1st or 2nd edition) for your work as a practitioner, educator, student, researcher, etc., we would love to hear from you. Your feedback as a user of the manual is extremely valuable and will influence the creation of the third edition and supplemental materials. Please take our brief survey.
?? Take the Traffic Signal Timing Manual Survey! The NCHRP 03-149 team is collecting initial information on signal timing practices that will be used in the update of the Signal Timing Manual (3rd?Edition). ?? The NCHRP 03-149 team (Iowa State University, Mead & Hunt, University of Idaho, Ilumin Transportation, Northern Arizona University) is investigating how the signal timing manual is currently used, current signal timing processes of stakeholders, and additional needs that can be better served with the refinement of the manual. ?? Congratulations, Beth Richards! ??
This month I’ve had 4 conferences in 3 weeks. My involvement in said conferences ranged from merely planning our exhibit booth décor to planning most of the event and somewhere in-between. But Thursday was the best day! The APWA Iowa Chapter bestowed the Stan Ring Distinguished Service Award upon me and I was elected President-Elect for 2025! My friends made sure Jim was with me during the awards ceremony (both the award and Jim attending were surprises!!). THANK YOU to all who made this happen and have supported me in this journey!
