The Institute for Sustainable Food at the University of Sheffield brings together pioneering researchers who are passionate about addressing the global challenges of food security and sustainability. The Institute is home to over 100 of the best minds in food research, including soil scientists and biologists, geographers and historians, psychologists and health researchers, working with a wide range of stakeholders from government, business and civil society. Our research seeks to find answers to a range of ‘real world’ problems, working at all scales from the local to the global. Our unique approach recognises that achieving a sustainable food future is as much a socio-cultural problem as a scientific or technological one, hence the need for transformative interdisciplinary research and an integrative ‘food systems’ approach. Placing the health of our environment, the healthiness of our food and the health of the global population at the core of our research, we seek to make agri-food systems more sustainable, helping us to live within the limits imposed by the resources available in the natural world. We also strive to make our research findings as accessible as possible, through innovative knowledge exchange programmes and a genuine commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in all our work.
