According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, rural Americans face more health disparities than their urban counterparts and are more likely to suffer from things like heart disease, stroke, cancer and chronic illness. The newly launched Penn State College of Medicine partnership-based center, the Center for Advancing Health Equity in Rural and Underserved Communities (CAHE-RUC), will address health disparities in Pennsylvania and beyond. CAHE-RUC is working with rural partners to address low vaccine and low health screening rates while expanding programs for health education, medical training and researcher access. The Blalock Taussig Thomas Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center was humbled to have Dr. Neil Wilson, MB, BS, FRCP, FRCP (CHI), FSCAI, speak with our faculty, fellows, and neonatologists about the interventional closure of patent ductus arteriosus in preterm infants at the bedside. Dr. Wilson discussed why, when, and how to identify appropriate patients and take care of them in the NICU without going to the catheterization lab or the operating room.??
