Connecting academic innovation to conservation solutions

关于我们

As global change accelerates, uncertainty about its impact increases and the need for solutions that address emerging conservation challenges rises. The Institute for Integrative Conservation (IIC) is at the forefront of transformational research and education to solve some of the most critical conservation issues our planet faces. By combining forces with public, private, and nonprofit sectors, the IIC serves to lead global efforts to advance sustainability and protect the environment for generations to come. William & Mary’s size, entrepreneurial culture, and breadth and depth of academic and research fields make it uniquely positioned to help lead this conservation revolution.

Multi-species Lorax: I try to talk for the birds and the bees, the trees and the seas, etc. I work on multidisciplinary human-wildlife interactions to implement solutions that are good for people and the planet.

Dear Institute for Integrative Conservation (IIC) Community: ? In the last few weeks, we have witnessed unprecedented changes in how the US federal government/Executive Branch supports people and conservation programs around the world and domestically. Many of these actions have directly affected the crucial work of our IIC partners and students. Programs have been eliminated, people have lost their livelihoods, and we are all worse for it. We also recognize that many people are more marginalized and threatened than ever. ? This is a message of support and continued hope to you, our treasured partners, students, and collaborators. The IIC is grateful for the incredible conservation work our partners are doing in Virginia and all over the world and recognize that your hard work is key to ensuring that nature, humans, and economies thrive. We are even more determined to work toward the mission of the Institute for Integrative Conservation: To empower an inclusive community of thought leaders to create and deliver timely, innovative solutions to the world's most pressing conservation challenges. ? We also take this opportunity to re-commit ourselves to our interconnected values: ? Creative. We are committed to challenging assumptions, embracing diverse knowledge, exploring novel approaches, and to working beyond institutional, cultural, and disciplinary boundaries to transform status quo conservation. ? Inclusive. We strive to democratize conservation by respecting the rights,?sovereignty, self-determination,?engagement, and cultural heritage of diverse communities, and by amplifying underrepresented voices, frameworks, methodologies, and action in conservation. We strive to create space and place for shared experience, to honor diverse conservation perspectives, and to include diverse perspectives in conservation conversations, research and action. ? Responsive. We strive to sensitively and respectfully co-craft solutions in partnerships, with gratitude. We connect knowledge to action and act with urgency. ? Bold. We are committed to challenging assumptions, taking necessary risks, disrupting failing systems, being experimental and creative, and being accountable for our decisions and actions. We imagine novel solutions and strive to inspire and empower others to take conservation?action. ? Transformative. We strive to encourage internal reflection and team engagement so we may fully transform the way we work with ourselves and others in the spirit with which these values are conceived. ? Through these values in action, we choose to double-down on the vision of the IIC. We envision a future in which people and nature are inextricably, equitably, and justly connected, and the natural environment thrives for current and future generations. We have your backs, and together we will achieve this. ? From, ? Your partners at the IIC. #biodiversity #conservation #integrativeconservation #environmentaljustice #wildlife

  • William & Mary students are part of an interdisciplinary team developing accessible, low-cost tools to support community-led conservation efforts in Madagascar and around the world! In collaboration with Conservation International, the Moore Center for Science, and Malagasy communities, student teams have created a low-cost water sensor that enables local communities to monitor the impact of forest restoration on water quality in Madagascar. This project brings together faculty and students from chemistry, engineering, and data science to collaborate with conservation partners in support of community-driven environmental efforts. The initiative began in 2023 with Fiona Gordon '25, Sophia Holincheck ’24, and Michael Hervien FENOMANARIVO and continued in 2024 with contributions from Jacob Timko ’24 and Leo Eichers ’25. Mentored by an interdisciplinary team including Professors Nathanael Kidwell and Jonathan Frey, P.E. from William & Mary, Dr. Maíra Ometto Bezerra and Dr. Kashif Shaad from the Moore Center for Science, and Jeannicq Randrianarisoa, Rindra Raveloarison, and Leonard Akwany Jr. from Conservation International, these students have received incredible mentorship. Now in its third year, W&M students Mandy Joyce '26 and Cy Strain-Seymour '26 will continue refining and testing the sensor. • INSTITUTE FOR INTEGRATIVE CONSERVATION IN SPOTLIGHT AS W&M LAUNCHES 2025 YEAR OF THE ENVIRONMENT At the 2025 Charter Day ceremony on February 7, William & Mary will launch the Year of the Environment. Charter Day marks the founding of Willam & Mary and looks forward to the future. It is a time of reflection on the past and commitment to building a strong future for the university and the W&M community, and for shaping resilient cultural, social, and natural environments. The Year of the Environment highlights W&M’s commitment to campus sustainability, climate resiliency, healthy ecosystems and healthy communities. The observance brings the estuarian environment of the W&M campus into focus and highlights W&M’s biodiversity and environmental research and impact on healthy ecosystems locally, regionally, and around the world. This yearlong observance demonstrates W&M’s support for and alignment with the IIC vision of “a future in which people and nature are inextricably, equitably, and justly connected, and the natural environment thrives for current and future generations”. This vision comes alive in 2025 as W&M spotlights environmental initiatives, including many that the IIC leads or collaborates on, and hosts special events convening around environmental themes. The IIC Conservation Speakers Series bridges the 2024 Year of the Arts and the 2025 the Year of the Environment with its 2024-25 theme “Creativity and Innovation in Conservation”. In March we welcome artist and author katie holten, and on Earth Day in collaboration with Vital Impacts, we host underwater photographer, whale whisperer, and National Geographic Fellow Brian Skerry. Join us in April for our annual Earth Week launch party and Conservation Research Program preview of 2025 applied research that W&M students will conduct with IIC conservation partners around the world. Follow us for latest on IIC research and events and Year of the Environment happenings! At the IIC we celebrate biodiversity every day, recognizing the urgent need and many opportunities we have to protect it. We look forward to celebrating the W&M Year of the Environment with you and to fostering a deep, lasting commitment to preserving the natural world for generations to come. https://ow.ly/XiTf50UPC1I #wmConservation #wmYOTE #wmIIC #wmCharterDay #wmResearch
