关于我们

The perils of the current information environment are coming to the fore as stories abound about how the uninformed may flounder or, worse yet, be victimized at the hands of rouge actors providing misinformation intended to confuse, disempower, or corrupt. Misleading news items and false analyses have led people to believe and spread conspiracy theories ultimately designed to undermine democracy, posing threats to our society. Information literacy is the knowledge, skills, and values that people draw on to traverse the challenges of today’s information environment. The Institute for Information Literacy at Purdue brings together researchers, educators, and other stakeholders to investigate information literacy challenges, such as misinformation or fake news, for the purpose of developing new information literacy models for navigating the perilous world of information. To do this, the Institute will form a community of information literacy researchers whose work will inform new information literacy models that enable people to successfully navigate today’s information environment.

Institute? Spotlight:? SPIRaL w/ Dr. Chelsea Peterson-Salahuddin ?? The Institute gives a big thanks to Dr. Chelsea Peterson-Salahuddin for her presentation “Negotiated Autonomy: The Role of Social Media Algorithms in Editorial Decision Making” shared with this year’s SPIRaL undergraduate researchers (Link to SPIRaL: https://lnkd.in/gS3DqCkf). ?? Dr. Peterson-Salahuddin presented key findings from her co-authored study & discussed her research approach & strategies for the SPIRaL researchers, who will soon kick off their own interview study about how student journalists perceive information challenges affecting their work writing for university student newspapers. ? ?? Dr. Peterson-Salahuddin is an Assistant professor & Presidential Fellow at the University of Michigan’s School of Information. She studies the ways in which marginalized communities overcome or continue to experience systemic barriers to equity through their interactions with digital communication technologies & how algorithmic biases have more recently come into play to shape user experience on these platforms. ??Dr. Peterson-Salahuddin was a featured speaker at the 2024 Information & Democracy: Education, Access, Libraries, & Society symposium where she presented about her research "Towards Equitable Information: Understanding & Addressing Barriers to Black & Women of Color’s Information Access & Use" (Link to youtube clip https://lnkd.in/gruBrT-i) Thank you, Dr. Peterson-Salahuddin, for sharing your expertise with our emerging information literacy researchers at Purdue!

Purdue Exponent Article with Noelia Alvarez ??Congratulations to Noelia A., a fourth year Purdue student studying artificial intelligence through the Philosophy department, for being featured in the Purdue Exponent's (The Purdue Exponent) recent story (link below) about the Libraries and School of Information Studies' new Minor in Information Studies! ??Noelia was one of the inaugural SPIRaL researchers who participated in the research program in 2023-2024 to study how Purdue college students perceive social media algorithms as they participate democratically on social media platforms. Noelia leveraged her knowledge in artificial intelligence as an intern with the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, DC this past summer, and she encourages other Purdue students to explore courses in the new Minor in Information Studies. ??Learn more about the Minor and how students can benefit from taking information studies courses by clicking the link below. https://lnkd.in/gZmKWvFF

We want to take a moment to highlight one of our SPIRaL scholars, Noelia Alvarez. Noelia is a first-generation college student who transferred from Ivy Tech Community College to Purdue in fall 2023 as an Artificial Intelligence major. In addition to presenting with the entire SPIRaL research team at ID:EALS in April 2024, Noelia presented a research poster for undergraduates curious to learn more about research at an event hosted by the Horizons Student Support Program (https://lnkd.in/gqEEC3-D)! Noelia will leverage her research skills and knowledge about algorithmic systems as she spends her summer in Washington D.C., where she is interning for the Bipartisan Policy Center. She will be working with the technology project, which examines issues surrounding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), such as fairness, regulation, privacy, and security. Congratulations to Noelia for these wonderful accomplishments! We are so very proud of Noelia and all of our SPIRaL scholars’ accomplishments this year! • ID:EALS 2024 is less than a week away, and we want to highlight another one of our speakers, artist Ellise Smith! Join us in welcoming Ellise, who will present work titled “Lies, Eyes, Truths, and Thighs: The Evolution of Accepting One's Body in a Unaccepting World.” When asked about her work, Ellise said, “Most individuals have heard that bodies come in all shapes, sizes, etc. but I want to speak, through my art, about the experiences of these differences and how it impacts the way people navigate life. I aim to show how the intersection of body type, race, gender, and more create different outcomes and experiences and how it is in fact a part of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). I know what it means to live in a body that is subjected to permissible discrimination because it does not align with what is popular or centered. I use photography as #VisualActivism to intentionally make space for difference. I use poetry as a space to uplift the voices of those who were and are silenced. My purpose as an artist is to showcase the importance of difference without extracting or hiding what society has tried to.” We can’t wait to hear more about Ellise’s work and to see it live at ID:EALS 2024!
