A study by the Center for an Urban Future estimates that more than 118,000 Western New Yorkers have started working towards a college degree and could not finish. Dr. Ann Rivera, our provost, spoke to The Buffalo News about this, highlighting the need for innovative solutions and collaborative efforts to enhance student outcomes. Villa has partnered with organizations like the Institute for Higher Education Policy and Arbol to make it easier for non-traditional students to return to the classroom and complete their degrees. “Policymakers will soon be forced to make decisions in the dark, unable to steward taxpayer dollars efficiently.†Our recent letter to Congress, signed by 87 organizations and researchers, urges lawmakers to maintain and protect our postsecondary data infrastructure. The Chronicle of Higher Education highlighted our concerns in a new article, which underscores the devastating consequences of dismantling of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). Without IES postsecondary studies and resources, we lose: ?? Key federal oversight roles ?? Safeguards for student-level data security ?? Access to vital data that inform evidence-based solutions. The data administered by IES is indispensable. Congress must act to #SaveIES. Today's executive order dismantling the U.S. Department of Education risks creating problems for the delivery of vital federal aid to students and institutions, disrupting the collection and publication of data that help students make informed decisions about where to go to college, and weakening the ability of policymakers to make evidence-based decisions. IHEP President & CEO Mamie Voight urges Congress to halt this misguided effort. Read her full statement: https://lnkd.in/eExJ6tYP #HigherEd #EdMatters #EdEquity

?? The future of education data access is at risk One major casualty of the sudden cancellation of grants and contracts at the Institute of Education Sciences is the ongoing support for National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) DataLab—a secure, web-based platform that enables quick and reliable education data analysis while protecting student privacy. Without maintenance, DataLab will erode, cutting off access to key federal datasets like NPSAS and BPS, which provide essential insights into college affordability, student financial aid, and economic outcomes. Policymakers, researchers, and student success professionals rely on these data to drive evidence-based decisions. If DataLab becomes obsolete, what critical research will be lost? Read our latest blog on why sustaining DataLab is essential for the future of higher education policy. ??: https://lnkd.in/eg6sNTQz #HigherEd #EdResearch #DataLab

The sudden cancellation of major contracts at the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) has halted critical studies that help institutions and policymakers understand college affordability, student outcomes, and workforce readiness. Worse yet, these cancellations raise serious concerns about the integrity, privacy, and security of sensitive student data. ? Nearly 90 organizations and researchers have joined IHEP in calling on Congress to protect postsecondary data and demand transparency around these cancellations. These actions shift our country away from evidence-based policymaking—and the students it supports—to uninformed guesswork. ? While our staff was together in-person last week for an IHEP Home Week, we were so grateful to volunteer with Bright Beginnings, Inc. We made bookmarks to go along with the books IHEP staff members chose to donate—many of which were personal favorites! Bright Beginnings helps connect DC families with early childhood education that sets students up for success in kindergarten and beyond, while also connecting parents with job, educational, and economic opportunities to uplift the whole family. Thank you, Bright Beginnings, for all you do to set students up for success! #EarlyChildhoodEducation #Nonprofits #CommunityService
