QI shouldn't increase inequities... QI projects must consider the impact on equity. This intervention, in mid-2019 amplified a modest inequity between the two groups in advanced care planning. It's imperative that our QI efforts prospectively recognize gaps in equity and account for them in our QI design, implementation, and measurement. #equity #healthcareequite #qualityimprovement #healthcare

IHQSE Grad, Ally (Alexandra) Fuher, MD, was recently featured in the University of Colorado Department of Medicine News article discussing her "Teachable Moment" essay published by JAMA Internal Medicine. Her essay, "The Harm of Inappropriate Central Line Blood Cultures in Clinical Practice," uses the story of a dialysis patient to highlight issues of increased risk of false positive results (and patient harm) in blood samples drawn from a central line rather than a peripheral vein. Check out the story and essay in the IHQSE newsroom.

"Low-value practices provide little or no benefit to children, expose children to potential harms, contribute to health care waste, and increase health care costs." IHQSE graduate Dr. Jillian Cotter is co-author on an invited commentary published in JAMA Network Open. The article discusses the need for increased efforts to identify and measure common instances of low-value clinical practices in pediatric trauma care, enabling quality leaders to set goals aimed at reducing these practices. Secure messaging: communication boon or workload bane? Secure messaging (SM) is becoming a common way for hospitalists to communicate, but most existing literature focuses on usage patterns and implementation science, without clear understanding of the benefits and challenges users may be encountering. IHQSE Faculty Michelle Knees, DO and team led a mixed methods study involving surveys and focus groups with hospitalists from 24 academic institutions, finding that, while SM enhances communication efficiency, it also increases multitasking, cognitive load, and alters interpersonal dynamics. We spoke with Dr. Knees to discuss some of the advantages and challenges for SM and what implications these findings may have on the way providers communicate in the future. Most change efforts in healthcare fail. The Improvement Academy offers knowledge, resources, and coaching to help QI projects succeed and answer key questions, such as: ? What tools can I use to hone my intervention? ? How do I understand data to know if I am making a change? ? How do I build the business case for my project? ? What do I do when I meet resistance? ? How do I build momentum and ensure my project creates positive energy? We want to help your QI project off the ground and across the finish line.
