The Institute for Health Equity Research, Evaluation and Policy of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers will convene communities and support the scientific infrastructure, implementation, program evaluation and training needed to identify and sustain the most effective strategies for attaining equity in health and healthcare, as defined by those with lived experience of health inequities. The League's new Institute will advance an emancipatory research approach to ensure that science benefits communities who bear the greatest human costs of long-standing health inequities.

Fifty-two years ago this July, the Associated Press told the story of the Public Health Service syphilis study and launched a new era of protections and accountability for the ethical conduct of research. Epidemiologist Peter Buxtun, who passed away this year, had the courage and empathy to bring this story to light. What would science be like if we all showed up for each other with care and compassion like Dr. Buxtun? Here is his story: https://lnkd.in/gbazidgJ

???As The Greater Boston Food Bank's study confirms, 1 in 3 Massachusetts residents continue to struggle with food insecurity. ?? The situation is especially dire for certain populations, as the report finds extensive disparities in food access among communities of color, LGBTQ+ households, seniors and college students. It also reveals that food insecurity can exacerbate chronic medical and mental health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, anxiety and depression. ?? Recognizing that food access and nutrition are foundational to the health of our communities, such stark disparities in food access are a clear issue of health equity. Thankfully, many CHCs work to relieve this issue by offering food distribution programs to meet local needs, while some larger providers screen for food insecurity alongside routine checkups. ?? In creating responsive industry and legislative solutions that respond to the needs of our most food-insecure communities, we can advance both food security and health equity in tandem. IHE Executive Director Dr. Cheryl Clark joined Representatives Mindy Domb & Marjorie Decker, Senators Jo Comerford & Julian Cyr, and the MA Black and Latino Caucus for a legislative briefing on long COVID in the Commonwealth. Long COVID is a chronic condition that affects 350,000 Massachusetts residents, an issue that is further exacerbated by deep-seated disparities in primary care access. Alongside other health care and public health leaders, Dr. Clark discussed the health equity implications of long COVID, policy priorities, and clinical care & social infrastructure to support those living with it. In case you missed it, IHE Executive Director Dr. Cheryl Clark contributed a piece on how Freedom Summer set the foundation for desegregation and health reform, and how it continues to inform today's health equity movement. Read the full piece below via STAT: https://lnkd.in/gzGYkzQa
Did you know that the history of the Health Center Movement ties into Freedom Summer, which took place 60 years ago this month? And what is the unfinished business of equity in healthcare facing our nation? In an op-ed for STAT, Cheryl Clark -- a physician and senior vice president of the?Institute for Health Equity Research Evaluation and Policy?for the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers -- describes how key founders of the Community Health Center model, particularly Dr. Robert Smith and Dr. Aaron Shirley, were active in Freedom Summer. ??? During Freedom Summer, Clark reminds us, "volunteers from across the nation streamed into Mississippi to set up schools, register Black voters, and fight for meaningful social and political representation in the face of violent opposition from segregationist organizations and members of local and state law enforcement." ?? She recounts how Dr. Robert Smith asked physicians to join him in the South to provide first aid and medical care in case they were needed by the volunteers. These physicians did so at their own peril. "At the time, the American Medical Association took an official position that?accommodated local policies?prohibiting Black physicians from joining regional medical associations or obtaining hospital privileges. By 1960, only?50 Black physicians?were practicing in the state of Mississippi. The state’s Department of Public Health made it clear that individuals who traveled to the state to deliver first aid to civil rights activists?would be prosecuted?rather than licensed to provide services," writes Clark. ?? She concludes with a rousing call to action to continue pushing for health equity for ALL: "During the summer of 2024, there may not be field stations or grassroots groups amplifying the desperate health care crises many Americans face. As a society, Americans have often viewed the experiences of individuals suffering from?shuttered hospitals?and?unmanageable health care costs?as private indignities that are just a part of life that people must navigate alone. Today’s injustices in health care stem from society’s failure to view inequities in health care delivery as this era’s pressing civil rights issue. As the country commemorates the 60th anniversary of Freedom Summer, Americans must continue challenging today’s 'normal' practices that prohibit people from accessing affordable, trustworthy, and compassionate care."
