Poverty among smallholder farmers is political. Govts neglect rural investment, favoring urban housing projects—white elephants that make little economic sense. Redirect funds to rural areas, empower farmers, and eradicate poverty where it hits hardest. #FoodJustice

Ginger is a widely studied functional food with significant health benefits. Rich in bioactive compounds such as gingerols, shogaols, and paradols, it exhibits strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-nausea properties. Research has also linked ginger consumption to improved immune function, pain relief, and potential anticancer effects. Its role in modulating gastrointestinal function makes it particularly effective in managing nausea, motion sickness, and digestive discomfort. Incorporating ginger into daily nutrition can enhance overall well-being. It can be consumed fresh, dried, or powdered, and integrated into teas, juices, and meals to maximize its therapeutic potential. As evidence continues to highlight its medicinal properties, ginger remains a valuable addition to a health-conscious diet. #FoodJustice #Nutrition #Wellness UVM Institute for Agroecology University of Vermont Agroecology Fund Agroecology Coalition Agroecology Europe Association PELUM Kenya Association African Population and Health Research Center

?? "Something's Not Right..." ???? Three bird friends are speaking up! One’s got a stomachache from eating pesticide-laced bugs, another lost their home to deforestation, and the third is struggling to find food. Bad agricultural practices are hurting our ecosystems and contributing to biodiversity loss in alarming ways. It is hurting the creatures that help maintain balance in nature. We need farming that works with nature, not against it. ?? Support agroecology. Protect biodiversity. ?? The Food Safety and Fortification Act has now been gazetted!?This is a groundbreaking step toward ensuring safer, fortified, and nutritious food for all Nairobi residents, especially vulnerable populations in the urban informal settlements. Did you know that up to 80% of Nairobi’s food supply comes from informal vendors? The new Food Safety and Fortification Act now formally recognizes their role and strengthens food safety regulation! The Act addresses critical aspects of food production, storage, distribution, and consumption, ensuring a safer food environment for Nairobi. This success, made possible by Concern Worldwide Kenya and the Lishe Poa Project, funded by KOICA, and in partnership with the Nairobi City County Government is a game changer for food security.

Healthy soil acts like a sponge—it soaks up water and releases it slowly, helping plants survive even in dry spells! ???? Degraded soil loses water quickly, leading to drought stress for crops. But you can boost your soil’s water-holding power by: ? Adding compost to improve structure ? Using mulch to retain moisture ? Practicing crop rotation to keep soil healthy ?? Every meal we enjoy comes with a responsibility beyond just satisfying our hunger. Yet, too often, food packaging and wrappings are left behind—clogging drains, littering streets, and disrupting the beauty of our shared spaces. A thriving community isn’t just about access to food but also about how we handle what remains after we’ve eaten. A little mindfulness in disposal can go a long way in keeping our cities clean, our environments safe, and our neighborhoods livable. Let’s be more intentional. Carry reusable options, dispose of waste properly, and make choices that respect both people and the planet. Small actions, big impact. ???? #ResponsibleConsumption #CleanCities #SustainableLiving SDGs UNEP-WCMC

?? Did You Know? ?? A teaspoon of healthy soil is teeming with life—billions of tiny organisms like bacteria, fungi, and nematodes! ???? These microscopic workers help break down organic matter, recycle nutrients, keep soil fertile, and improve soil resilience against droughts and extreme climate conditions. To put it into perspective, in just one gram of rich soil, there can be 100 million to 1 billion bacteria- meaning there are more living organisms in that spoonful of soil than the entire human population on Earth! ?? Want to reduce expensive farm inputs while keeping your soil alive and productive? Add compost, fermented teas, and mulch! ???They feed beneficial microbes, restore soil fertility, and strengthen your farm’s long-term productivity and sustainability. ???? #SoilHealth #EmpoweredFarmer #ClimateResilience #SustainableFarming #Agroecology #HealthySoil CIFOR-ICRAF Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT CGIAR PELUM Kenya Association FAO ISFAAKenya
