exploring the use of advanced computing in research
关于我们
The Institute for Computing in Research is a consortium of researchers, students, and teachers who work on pedagogical aspects of using advanced computing methods for research and scholarship. Any application of computing to physical science, life science, social science, arts and humanities is of interest to our researchers. We are located in Santa Fe (New Mexico), Portland (Oregon), and Austin (Texas). At the Institute, our mission is to train pre-college students in developing in-depth research skills and advanced programming methods through the guidance of mentors and teachers. This is accomplished through weekend intensive programming workshops, followed by biweekly mini courses in programming. All of this training culminates in our summer internship program, where we pay students a stipend to conduct research under the guidance of our world-class volunteer mentors.

Please get the word around to highly motivated 10th, 11th, 12th graders who want to do research. Remember: we are a research program, not a STEM program: research happens in social sciences, life sciences, arts, humanities, and physical sciences. And though our offices are in Santa Fe, Portland, and Austin, we also take visiting scholars in each city. https://lnkd.in/gUMai6mn

“I was always interested in STEM, but in a vague way, nothing concrete,” says Santa Fe High School senior and Lab intern Logan Moore. “Now I’ve seen the day-to-day general practices that make research interesting and fun.” See how Los Alamos internships prepare students for research careers in our 1663 magazine ?? https://ow.ly/FLsA50UV1E8

Check out this cool article about our former intern, Shira Goldhaber-Gordon, who discusses (among other things) the effect of interning at the Institute for Computing in Research. https://lnkd.in/dYgfwN5j
“My favorite part of interning at the Laboratory was talking with other interns and staff scientists about intriguing scientific problems,” Shira Goldhaber-Gordon said about her Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) experience! Dear young scholars (and those who know young scholars), We are a non-profit whose goal is to prepare students for research and advanced academic work. Here is a rapid-glance look at what the Institute offers to students -- remember: all that we offer is free of cost, and in the final stages we pay students to do full-time internships. There is good stuff coming up -- please send people our way with this link. https://lnkd.in/gqM--f-A

I recommend reading this clear article by Melanie Mitchell, after which do yourself a favor and catch her awesome public lecture in Santa Fe at: https://lnkd.in/gEh3hdrt
New column by me in Science: "Debates on the nature of artificial general intelligence" ? https://lnkd.in/g7KApxac ? -- I ask "What the heck is this AGI thing everyone is talking about?" ? -- I explore how the concept of AGI has changed over the history of AI ? -- I discuss how many people in AI have a quite different view of how intelligence works than those who study biological intelligence ? I hope you will read it!
