As climate change and volatile trade relationships threaten food security around the world, food buffer stocks are making a comeback. Our new policy brief from Calvin Manduna digs into global trends and future directions for public stockholding in developing countries: https://lnkd.in/gGPzFVEp

IATP works to ensure fair and sustainable food, farm and trade systems.
关于我们
IATP works locally and globally at the intersection of policy and practice to ensure fair and sustainable food, farm and trade systems. In the mid-1980s, family farmers across America were in the fight of their lives. Prices had dropped below the cost of production. Family farmers were told they were inefficient and they had to either get big or get out. Deeply flawed national and international policies were the root cause of the crisis. A galvanizing effort to save the family farm helped spawn the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP). In 1986, IATP began documenting the underlying causes of America's rural crisis and proposing policies that would benefit farmers, consumers, rural communities and the environment. Read more about IATP's history IATP works with organizations around the world to analyze how global trade agreements impact domestic farm and food policies. Alongside a global coalition, IATP advocates for fair trade policies that promote strong health standards, labor and human rights, the environment and, most fundamentally, democratic institutions. We are developing alternative economic models that include clean sources of energy such as wind power and biofuel that would spur rural development. We're working with landowners to form cooperatives that promote sustainable forest management. We're advocating for green businesses and farms that reduce toxic runoff into the Great Lakes and Mississippi River. We are working to stop the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture and aquaculture, while limiting the release of mercury and other toxic pollutants that fall onto farmland and enter the food supply. IATP is also monitoring the impact of genetically engineered crops on the environment, human health and farmer income.

Agricultural practices that increase soil carbon have many ecological & resilience benefits, but "carbon farming" is being oversold as a climate solution, allowing major polluters to greenwash their emissions & profit from carbon markets. A market-based approach to soil carbon storage cannot deliver the transformative change we need to slow global heating and protect food systems. https://lnkd.in/gVa6zUXD

IATP staff are still sifting through Chair Stabenow's proposed Farm Bill. We are pleased with the inclusion of several provisions, including ensuring long-term, stable funding for conservation programs, strengthening the farm safety net for small and diversified growers and providing relief for farmers affected by PFAS contamination. https://lnkd.in/gkbgMmKS

NEW: A wave of new corporate climate disclosure rules in several countries will require many global food and agriculture companies to report on their climate risk, emissions and plans to reduce those emissions. These rules are a first step toward informing investors and the public about corporate climate-related risk. On the eve of #COP29’s Food and Agriculture Day, IATP is releasing a new analysis by Leila Yow that compiles and compares these policies across jurisdictions. Read it here and explore an interactive map and table showing the scope of the new rules: https://lnkd.in/gPbPPjcf

Healthy soils are important for healthy food systems – from ecosystem stability to yield to climate resilience. But relying on soil for carbon trading schemes is a dangerous and ineffective climate mitigation strategy. Read the latest Soil Atlas, featuring this article by IATP’s Sophie Scherger on the risks of soil carbon credits: https://lnkd.in/gDwMxCR3
?? Healthy #soils are vital for food security, #biodiversity & climate resilience, yet over 60% of EU soils are damaged. As land use competition grows, soil must be central in #climate policies ?????? ??
