To advance equitable food systems that promote public health and prevent illness.
关于我们
Access to adequate, safe, and wholesome food is increasingly critical for sustaining the world’s growing population. Yet, efforts to advance food safety and nutrition security are often siloed, with minimal consideration of the impacts in these complementary areas. For example, redistributing food waste to food-insecure individuals can inadvertently increase the risk of foodborne illness—through temperature abuse and mishandling—in a vulnerable population that has limited access to resources such as healthcare and paid sick leave to deal with even mild gastrointestinal illnesses. Food safety and nutrition security are intrinsically linked. Foodborne illness can impede the body's ability to absorb nutrients, while malnutrition can impair the body's response to foodborne illness. Solutions to food system issues need to account for this synergy. The Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition Security aims to break down these silos and advance equitable food systems that promote public health and prevent illness, using a One Health approach.

https://lnkd.in/ez-z7Mgx I want to give a shout-out to Dr. Headrick an IFSAN's Core Faculty member.
Thank you to the Consumer Federation of America for hosting the National Food Policy Conference to bring together stakeholders across sectors to discuss the pressing problems and threats in our food system and food policy landscape. I had the pleasure of moderating a panel discussion focused on the state of the science of ultra-processed foods, ways to improve consumer knowledge, and policy pathways forward. Thanks to Drs. Kevin Hall, Jen Cadenhead, PhD, RDN, Aviva Musicus and to Melissa Halas, MA RDN CDE for a wonderful discussion and sharing their expertise. And I was lucky enough to have two of my students from the Department of Exercise & Nutrition Sciences at The George Washington University- Milken Institute School of Public Health, Eleanor Flacke and Humay Sadig, join for the day.

???? Yesterday, in a resignation letter, Jim Jones, FDA Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods, stated that 89 “indiscriminate” firings in the Human Foods Program, including layoffs of employees with “highly technical expertise in nutrition, infant formula, food safety response,” would render his job to protect food safety “fruitless.” ?? Each December we host an?annual fundraiser in honor of Kevin’s birthday — he would have been 26 on December 10th! — to support our efforts to improve food safety and prevent unnecessary illnesses and deaths from foodborne diseases. These funds have previously supported the Center for Foodborne Illness Research and Prevention, which has since evolved into the Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition Security (IFSAN) at the George Washington University. Our vision and mission remain focused on protecting public health and preventing illness by advancing food systems that consistently and equitably provide safe, accessible, and nutritious food for all. We will continue to prioritize translating scientific research into actionable policy and practice. This year our goal is to raise $10,000 toward an endowment that will provide sustainable funding for our work. We'll use the money we raise to support student research projects and student travel to conferences like the International Association of Food Protection Annual Meeting. As always, we’d greatly appreciate your support – either through a donation or by sharing through your social and personal networks. Together, we can make a difference in food safety!?? Best, Barb
