I didn't have a chance to snap a photo of our INSPRA (Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association) session and all the snow warriors who made it out despite the less-than-ideal road conditions last week. Even so, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the topic and say THANK YOU to our wonderful panelists! Far too often, our professional development focuses on what to do during a crisis, but in my years of #SchoolPR, I have learned there is nothing worse than having to be reactive to a school safety emergency. This month, we focused on how to partner with local law enforcement and other impacted parties to proactively prepare for a crisis, from meeting regularly with a school safety task force, to identifying law enforcement PIOs and creating standard messaging. We also did a deep dive on how to educate staff and parents on your school safety protocols in order to avoid confusion when an emergency occurs. Thankful for a full house at INSPRA (Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association) Tips & Tactics today. The idea sharing is an annual favorite and I absolutely love learning from my colleagues in other districts. Thank you to everyone who attended and shared! Happy holidays!

Today, I had the opportunity to represent INSPRA (Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association) and National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) along with Janet Spector Bishop and Jen Vujosevic at the Illinois Association of School Boards, Illinois Association of School Business Officials and ILLINOIS ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS Conference, which we call Triple I. It’s always interesting to try to tailor a presentation to three unique groups, not knowing who will attend your session. So we treated this as another opportunity to engage in strategic communication by conducting a poll near the start of our presentation. Research is the first step in any strategic communications plan, followed by planning, implementation and evaluation (known as RPIE among PR professionals). That also gave us the opportunity to model exactly what we were talking about in our presentation, entitled Comms 101, The Essential Guide to School PR.
