"The K1000ULE will provide the US Army with unmatched Aerial Tier Network Extension (ATNE), Electronic Warfare (EW), and Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities for deep sensing and communication extension over large distances.” This support is a huge step forward for scaling the production and delivery of the K1000ULE, the longest-endurance, fully electric, zero-emissions autonomous aircraft in its size and weight category (Group-2 UAS). As was discussed last week at AUVSI Defense, Part III—Autonomy in Action, the U.S. defense sector is increasingly focused on integrating autonomous and uncrewed technologies to maintain a competitive edge. What we're up to: We recently submitted testimony responding to Congressional hearings and have emphasized the urgency to close the “say-do gap” in defense technology integration and pivot the Department of Defense’s acquisition processes to focus on outcomes. What's next: The U.S’s advantage is that we boast strong capital markets and a culture of innovation. What is needed is a demand signal for private capital to invest in building the industrial base that is needed now, and that will be required in the immediate future—and AUVSI is moving toward this point of friction. Are weaponized First-Person View (FPV) drones one-way attack weapons? Not strictly. FPV usage exploded in 2023 because their design format is cheaper and more easily mass-produced than traditional civilian quadcopters with flexible turret-based sensors. The FPV format is increasingly being applied to non-one-way roles. For example, Ukraine’s Wild Hornets non-profit group pioneered reusable dive-bombing drones releasing 5 pound munitions, which typically survive between 10 and 30 missions before loss. The four-month-long Battle of Avdiivka (October 2023-February 2024) is one of the bloodiest battles of the 21st century to date. It also arguably stands as the first occasion that unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) took on a prominent operational role. This ruined and heavily fortified city in the Donetsk Oblast region of Ukraine, Avdiivka, became the primary focus of Russian offensive operations following the petering-out of Ukraine’s 2023 counteroffensive. The campaign coincided with the ascension of U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson who placed a block on U.S. military aid that soon caused a disastrous shortage of artillery shells for Ukraine. Starved of artillery shells, Ukrainian forces turned to FPV kamikaze drones to become their primary indirect fire and anti-tank weapon.
