At the University of Maryland Global Campus, we know that connection, sense of belonging, and community are essential to student success - especially for our adult learners balancing education with work, family, and military service. New research from the Annenberg Institute at Brown University confirms what we’ve always believed—community and connection fuel student success. Yet, many students, especially in community colleges, struggle with engagement due to work, financial stress, and mental health challenges. Key findings: ?? Depression leads to students completing one fewer course on average. ?? 60% of community college students face housing insecurity. ?? More time spent on campus = higher credit completion & persistence. The takeaway? Students who feel supported and connected are more likely to persist.
