Congratulations to our ten Insurance Innovation Prize Finalists! This Prize, which is supported by NYSERDA, promotes increases in research and development activities that expand affordability and accessibility of insurance solutions for energy-related technologies and narrow the gap between science, engineering, and underwriting approaches. Later this month, the Finalists will pitch their proposed solution to a panel of expert judges as part of the winners selection process. The Prize winners will then set out to deliver a new insurance product in New York State by Q2 2026. With at least $10 trillion of insurance coverage needed to reach net zero by 2030, it is essential that the insurance industry steps up and works to fill the renewable energy coverage gaps in unique ways. We are excited about the wide range of ways that these Finalists represent the level of innovation insurance needs across the clean energy, clean transportation, and clean buildings sectors. We will be showcasing some of the Finalists’ ideas at the InnSure Climate Week Forum (https://lnkd.in/ec9zwHb7) in NYC, and we will announce the winners later this year. Congratulations and good luck to all of the Finalists as they move on in the competition! ?? Ecostrat Inc. and New Energy Risk ?? Energetic Capital ?? EVSTAR ?? Exante ?? kWh Analytics ?? 关于我们
Insurance has a crucial leadership role to play in tackling climate risk. The industry exists to manage challenging risks. It brings strong financial capital, unique risk management capabilities, and a centuries-long history of helping the world respond to risk (electricity, aviation, automobiles). But current industry solutions and practices are failing to fulfill insurance’s historic role. The result is a large and growing protection gap that particularly imperils the most vulnerable communities. At InnSure, we believe insurance can lead - by building innovative insurance products that incentivize community resilience investments and by crafting well-designed solutions to help the world manage, mitigate and recover from the impacts of climate-related risks.

Climate change is costing communities across the country, not just those on the "frontlines" of climate change, billions of dollars—community leaders can help reduce that cost by investing in community insurability. In this article for?The Bond Buyer, InnSure's Charlie Sidoti discusses how community leaders are in a unique position to drive their locale's insurability because they have the most say over land use, building codes, and infrastructure. And investing in insurability is a thoughtful way for municipal leaders to ensure their communities' economic stability as climate change impacts intensify—one that goes hand-in-hand with adaptation planning, smart development, and brings tangible benefits to all stakeholders. Missed last month’s ARISE US, Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), and InnSure webinar on how IIGCC's Physical Climate Risk Assessment Methodology (PCRAM) can help deliver financing and risk transfer for infrastructure projects? The recording is available on our Vimeo! https://lnkd.in/e4u7_iPP Check it out to learn more about PCRAM and its real-world case studies and the planned PCRAM 2.0 improvements, including risk transfer mechanisms and links to insurance — which will further showcase the benefits of optimized resilience investment for real assets. #insurance #climaterisk #risktransfer #riskresilience #infrastructure

Did you know that Oysters used to cover up to 30% of the North sea? Now we're down to less than 1%... Did you know?? - One oyster can filter up to 190 liters of water PER DAY! - They extract and store carbon from seawater to build their shells - Oyster reefs absorb up to 93% of wave energy, which reduces erosion - They require no feed, as they filter their own food from the water Oysters are crucial to create important habitats for other marine life, hence boosting biodiversity Credit: Don Ritzen Follow Sophia Kianni ?? for more climate news and opportunities!

InnSure is thrilled to share that we've been named as one of the winners of the RISE Riverine Community Resilience Challenge! We'll be working with our colleagues at HR&A Advisors and Stantec to create a Total Cost of Risk (TCOR) Simulator for riverine flooding-related risks, which will dynamically calculate the full spectrum of risk impacts to people, assets, and communities based on different risk mitigation and transfer scenarios. The Simulator will address a major gap in the current insurance market: the true cost of catastrophic events on household and local government budget sheets aren't accounted for in the pricing of risk or insurance products. With a full understanding of the community-wide costs, community leaders can assess the scale of the "uninsured losses" and advocate for better insurance products. The insights from the Simulator will also be used to inform a preliminary design for a Community Insurance Program. Wildfires in Brooklyn - let that sink in!
In today's environment expect the unexpected. Just three days ago I was having conversations at InsurTech NY about wildfire protection. A seemingly remote coverage option here in NYC. Yet, here we are. A record lack of rain in NYC for the month of October combined with high winds brought a brush fire to Prospect Park in Brooklyn in November. Though covering only 200 x 300 feet due to the terrain it took just under 3 hours to put out. Tremendous credit to the New York City Fire Department for battling the challenging conditions and extinguishing the blaze. Reposting this link to a WaPo article earlier this week by Michael J. Coren on mispriced climate risk featuring DeltaTerra Capital and Climate Core Capital LLC and my friend Owen C. Woolcock who has some good comments about the article and the moment we are in. First time I've ever been called an iconoclast. I kind of like it I have to say...
Executive in Residence, ADL Ventures | Climate Core Capital | Center for Green Buildings and Cities, Harvard University
What did we learn this week, and what is harder to ignore? In an eventful week in American life, a journalist at The Washington Post named Michael J. Coren quietly released an article online Tuesday, that he'd been working on for several months. The story was a profile on two different approaches to the same worldview of a changing climate: the 'Big Climate Long', and our firm Climate Core Capital LLC, alongside our industry colleague Dave Burt and his team at DeltaTerra Capital, working on the 'Big Climate Short'. On Election Day 2024, at a national newspaper with digital unique visitors in the tens of millions every month, our story for much of Tuesday, November 5 2024 was the SECOND MOST read article on the entire website, after the US election live updates blog. Three days on, we are still asking: why did this story get such a response? What was it articulating that led to so many shares globally, among friends, family and work colleagues? Sometimes in human behaviour, the public leads government into a need for new policy, rather than the other way around. The best explanation we can give for this latent interest, is that the public — everyday homeowners, renters and property investors — are already in the place they want governments to be. They can visualise how a changing climate, and bigger cities in the path of more frequent and intense risk events, will lead to wealth destruction. Some already know the pain of a hurricane or wildfire upending their world. Others have felt the effects of a flooded basement after an abnormal rain event, or sat in an emergency ward with a ageing relative after a heatwave. As our cofounder Rajeev Ranade often says, some things will bend and some will break. The public already understands the risk recognition system is breaking. They know insurance pricing is on an unsustainable trajectory, and mortgages are harder and harder to get. Sellers are not finding buyers in many parts of the country, transactions ended for silent reasons. Everyone knows the risk is there, no one wants the music to stop and have their assets, their neighbourhoods, disproportionately affected. This is a hard problem, with no single solution. But if the largest economy in the world goes to the polls in a globally momentous four yearly event, and the second highest story of interest on the Washington Post's website on polling day is an article on two little-known investor groups trying to prepare the world for a new reality, the tell is evident: the public are thinking about this already, and more than governments appreciate.
