Happy World Children’s Day! Today, we celebrate international efforts to improve children’s welfare. Despite the increase in primary school enrollment in sub-Saharan Africa, 9 out of 10 children in Sub-Saharan Africa cannot read or do basic math by age 10, suggesting that the traditional way of teaching isn’t working for many students. In Ghana, Differentiated Learning, an intervention that groups learners by their learning level rather than age or grade for a part of each school day to improve basic reading and math skills among primary school students, has shown promising results in improving student learning outcomes. Learn how IPA works with the Ministry of Education in Ghana to help Differentiated Learning reach more students. ? In 2021, Graeme B., Rebecca Littman, Rebecca Wolfe, and colleagues in partnership with Mercy Corps found that pro-peace #RadioMessages delivered by a respected religious leader in Nigeria increased support for reintegrating former Boko Haram members. ?? This research shows that while #forgiveness messaging may not eliminate negative feelings, it can shift behavioral intentions, norms, & attitudes toward allowing former fighters to re-engage in community life. These findings suggest that carefully designed, radio-based approaches could support long-term peacebuilding efforts. Read more on the study here: bit.ly/bhn2018 ?? Findings from this study went on to inform Mercy Corps approach to preventing & countering violent extremism. The evidence also shaped their work on aspects of norms and behavior change, such as working with trusted leaders as mentors of at-risk youth in the CREATE Program (bit.ly/mc0916) to prevent radicalization, & actively training leaders in interest-based mediation and negotiation: bit.ly/0916m As conflicts grow more frequent & complex, it’s essential to explore further ways to build more tolerant & inclusive societies. IPA’s Peace & Recovery Initiative’s competitive fund, generously supported by UK International Development, is now open for proposals on these & related topics. Submit by November 22nd: bit.ly/pnrcfpviii #DayofTolerance #PeaceAndRecovery #MoreEvidenceLessPoverty

IPA Philippines and Teach for the Philippines have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize our collaboration! Over the past months, #IPA Philippines and Teach for the Philippines have been exploring how to leverage the 20-year Philippine Socioeconomic Panel Survey (PSPS) and measure the impact of TFP’s Functional Literacy Program (FLP). Through this partnership, the FLP will be delivered via mobile phones by private tutors for the first time with the support from IPA. This approach builds on models like #mEducation, which has shown significant impact on numeracy. IPA is committed to working alongside thought leaders such as TFP to address educational challenges and scale effective solutions. We look forward to seeing how these programs can reach even more learners across the country.
