IRI would like to extend hearty congratulations to Demis Hassabis, winner of the IRI Medal in 2021, who was just awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry! ? The 2021 winner of the IRI Medal, Demis Hassabis of Google’s AI Unit, Google DeepMind, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry last month for his work in protein structure prediction with the use of AI. Dr. Hassabis got his start as a chess player and game designer, which got him “thinking about thinking itself,” leading to greater and greater advances in AI, culminating with the prestigious prize. In his message to IRI members on receiving the award, he said: “I want to leave you with a useful way to think about AI. It is a bit like the Hubble Telescope, which allows cosmologists and astronomers to see further out into the universe and to understand it better. AI as a kind of generalized version of the Hubble Telescope—the ultimate tool to help scientists see further in whatever domain they’re studying.” ?
