It’s no secret that STEM fields, especially technology, have gathered attention in recent years for their lack of diversity. In a 2018 study by the National Science Foundation, women make up around 20% of college students majoring in engineering and computer science. But why is inclusivity in these environments so important? When women and other minorities are underrepresented in STEM, our thoughts and ideas are also no longer included. Our mission is to illuminate the impact of these biased outcomes, fostering awareness and encouraging active engagement to bridge the gender gap in STEM, ensuring a more equitable and innovative future. What is InnovateHer? A 36 hour hackathon with a mission to create a welcoming and inclusive space for students of marginalised identities in technology. Hosted by 7 Purdue student organisations and the Purdue Student Government. Our Goals - Encouraging everyone to recognise and create solutions for issues faced by women and gender minorities - Celebrating the remarkable contributions of women in technology - Spotlight the challenges faced by women and non-binary people in technology - Embolden all students and promote active participation towards closing the gender gap in STEM Our Reason - STEM fields, especially technology, still face a lack of diversity - Women make up around 20% of college students majoring in engineering and computer science - Underrepresentation in STEM results in diverse thoughts and ideas being excluded Ultimately, our mission is to increase the recognition of these problems and help solve them.
