It was an honor to represent Innovate Memphis during the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities workshop last month alongside my two predecessors and community leaders who've made our city's innovation brand what it is today! Here's to many thoughts outside the box, passionate collaborators, and healthy risks in the year ahead for our community.
Last week, 160 innovators from innovation teams across the country descended on Memphis for the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities City and Community Workshop. Innovation teams were able to sync with i-team peers, partnership tables and BASC partners for a week to deepen relationships and understanding around the work happening in their cities. Mayor Paul Young set the right tempo, opening the convening with remarks about the history of innovation in Memphis and the urgency and fertile ground we have for even more ingenuity through our people, assets and potential. The first ever i-team director, Doug McGowen, shared out on the inaugural Memphis i-team’s success with MEMShop and MEMFix alongside Alandas Dobbins, Cynthia Norwood Terry, JD, MBA, Pamela Hill, Jessica Lotz and Justin Entzminger. A true example of sustainable impact. And you can’t experience Memphis without visiting the National Civil Rights Museum. Innovation teams were able to be reminded of why innovative work is needed more than ever, with prioritization of Black and marginalized communities. I’m looking forward to continuing to glean, collaborate, execute and build within Memphis and alongside the 24 other cities on the innovation journey for cleaner more economically thriving communities.
