Imagine a world where you could put a flexible insert into your bra that tracks real-time dynamic changes of breast tissue. In addition to having a personalized breast cancer screening plan, Dr. Canan Dagdeviren and her research team at the MIT Media Lab are working on a device that will potentially do just that. Watch episode 4 with Dr. Dagdeviren on Innovate and Elevate: https://lnkd.in/gxwQmgCu In 2021, Northpond Ventures partnered with?the MIT School of Engineering and Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship to accelerate opportunities for women founders. I met Canan through that program. Thank you to the visionary Dr. Anantha Chandrakasan, Dr.?Susan Hockfield, Dr. Sangeeta Bhatia, Kit Hickey, and Bill Aulet for their support with that program. #innovateandelevatepodcast #womenshealth #innovation

Do you know your breast cancer lifetime risk level? This is a key piece of information for all women. With 1 in 8 women getting breast cancer, early detection is key. And knowledge is power. Knowing your risk level, you can partner with your doctor to develop a personalized risk-based screening plan for you. Late last week, the actress Olivia Munn spoke about how this knowledge of her breast cancer risk level helped detect her own breast cancer earlier. In this episode of Innovate and Elevate, titled “Copilot Your Breast Health”, I speak with the brilliant Dr. Brem Rachel about her own breast cancer journey, the importance of knowing your personal breast cancer risk level, and making a personalized plan with your doctor based on that risk level. So what is your risk level? The two main models used today are here, and you can find that out now: 1. Tyrer-Cuzick model: https://lnkd.in/ejYus4_b 2. Gail model: https://lnkd.in/emEVhm8Y The Brem Foundation to Defeat Breast Cancer also has a new tool called Check Mate: https://lnkd.in/eRbCnnKf Please note that additional risk factors exist beyond those mentioned in this clip. In alignment with National Cancer Prevention Month, we bring you Episode 2 of Innovate and Elevate from our Women's Health Series. Today's episode is titled?“Mammography is Essential. Quality Matters.” with guest Dr. Janet Storella, M.D. With 1 in 8 women in the U.S. getting breast cancer, early detection can make a massive difference in treatment, quality of life, and survival rates. Today, mammography is our first step for screening. It is an essential tool. It's also an area that has had a lot of controversy since its initial uptake in the 1960s. While it may be surprising that our first line of defense is a tool from over 50 years ago, it still plays a useful role is women's health. Knowledge is power. My hope is that women (and their families) make personalized decisions on screening. Today this starts with mammography, but guidelines vary. For example, the American Cancer Society says: ? Women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms (x-rays of the breast) if they wish to do so. ? Women ages 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year. ? Women 55 and older should switch to mammograms every 2 years or can continue yearly screening. On the other hand, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says: ? Start breast cancer screening at age 40 instead of the previously recommended starting age of 50. ? Get screening mammograms every other year from ages 40 to 74. Despite differences in guidance, one thing remains the same today: Mammography is an essential tool. On today's episode, we aim to demystify the mammogram, talk about the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the reading of mammograms and detection of cancer, and discuss the surprising insight that quality matters when you get your mammogram. The issue of quality is so important here. This is not like going to McDonald's and getting a hamburger. The amount of compression used to get your image matters, as does the experience level of the radiologist (i.e. do they focus predominantly on breast health). All women deserve to know this information to be able to choose quality care. We can do better by women. My hope is for women to get regular mammograms and know these basics so that the screening experience is one where they and their families are in the driver's seat for their health. https://lnkd.in/g9V57HEU #innovateandelevatepodcast #womenshealth #innovation #breastcancer #mammography
