?? Did you know that Omtre has specialized expertise in the industrial ecology of reclaimed timber in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC)? Today, Francisco Tienda Res��ndez gave a lunch talk to the industrial ecology researchers of CML Urban Research (Leiden University) about Omtre��s solutions, like �� ?? REbl?kk �� and Omtre��s learning and innovation activities through R&D projects like �� ?? CIRCULess ?? Drastic ?? SirkTRE ?? InnoTLT �� and of course �� ?? the RAW project. (Yes, he presented them all, very shortly, in 2-3 slides.) Francisco shared also about his experiences (and struggles) as environmental impact and reuse consultant in new construction and renovation projects. The LCA standards are not designed for circularity transitions. Many researchers, consultants, policy experts and standard bodies are working on improving assessment methods; and Omtre takes part in the discussion. It is not our core business, but we also offer some expertise in Norway to other industry actors. Some time ago, we also won a public tender with OUTLINE ARKITEKTUR. I will brag a bit (sorry not very Norwegian) but it was the first tender I helped to write. I am more used to write European R&D applications ??. ? Introducing Practical Guidelines for the ReUse of Structural Steel and Timber Elements ?? ?? After extensive development work in an interdisciplinary team, we were excited to unveil our Guideline for Reusing Structural Steel and Timber Elements at the symposium ��Less Tr?sh,�� organized by the Ministry for Regional Development and Housing. In collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), this guideline aims to provide actionable steps for reusing structural building components, helping to conserve resources in construction. ??? ?? The key takeaway from our results is clear: the reuse of structural elements from steel and timber is not only feasible but can also be aligned with regulatory standards. In other words, it��s time for the building sector to roll up our sleeves and take action! ?? ?? Highlights of the Guideline Include: ? ?? A structured approach to assessing and reclassifying existing structural elements from steel and timber. ?? ? ??? Proposals for dismantling, preparing, and reintegrating structural steel and timber parts. ?? ? ?? Recommendations for integrating reused structural components into regulatory processes to obtain case-by-case approvals (ZiE) and general approvals (abZ). ? ??? Following the symposium, my colleague Thomas Ummenhofer also presented the guideline to Parliamentarians at a Parliamentary breakfast in Berlin, ensuring that policymakers are informed and engaged in promoting circular construction practices. ?? ?? A special thanks to Minister Nicole Razavi, State Secretary Andrea Lindlohr, and their team (represented by Eberhard K��hnemann, Nadja Lenek, Johannes Streib, and Dominik Horvath) for their trust and constructive support throughout this project. From R&D to a commercial product! I initially joined Omtre as a sustainability advisor, but as Omtre gradually transitions into a production company focused on implementing circular solutions for timber construction, my role has evolved too. Before summer, I became the product manager for #REbl?kk at Omtre. I'm now gaining experience in equipment, production prototyping, and balancing both economic and environmental sustainability. It��s been an exciting journey! By summer 2025, we aim to have semi-automated production of #REbl?kk in place. + Engaging with Policy Leaders on Sustainable Building Solutions ?????+ Last week, Andrea Lindlohr, State Secretary in the Ministry of State Development and Housing, visited the Research Centre for Steel, Timber and Masonry. She was accompanied by the Mayor of Karlsruhe, Dr. Frank Mentrup and Karlsruhe's Member of Parliament, Alexander Salomon. ???? During the visit, the focus was on "Sustainable Building" and "Resource Efficiency." The guests toured our testing facilities, gaining insights into ongoing research projects such as InnoTLT and multiple projects on resource efficient connections. We also discussed our draft guideline for the reuse of structural elements from steel and timber, a project initiated by Ms. Andrea Lindlohr and her team. ??? A key takeaway was the importance of incorporating circular economy principles from the start of construction projects. This includes using whole building components with minimal reprocessing as well as establishing regulations to encourage the reuse of building products while maintaining safety standards. ?? #PublicationAlert: How can CT-scanning contribute to non-destructive assessment (NDA) of reclaimed timber elements and more constructions with post-consumer timber? Omtre is part of several Norwegian and European Research R&D projects that look into NDA at the industrial scale, e.g. SirkTRE, Drastic, #CIRCULess and #RAW. Before summer, we got a conference paper accepted and presented. This paper is authored by ?? Martin Tamke, Tom Svilans, Mette Ramsgaard Thomsen of CITA at the Royal Danish Academy, ?? Johannes A. J. Huber of Lule? University of Technology ?? Wendy Wuyts of Omtre. And it features reclaimed timber from Omtre. This will be the first publication of a planned series in the coming years. Here it comes! Our pilot building demonstrating CLT and glulam manufactured entirely from secondary timber recovered from demolition.
