Arc Additive Limited Titanium AM How difficult is producing Titanium parts built using WAAM? Are we perhaps a wee bit guilty of over thinking or over complicating the process? Equipment used for building the 4 titanium test walls below as shown in the picture - a set of wire snips and 2 tempilsticks (100 & 150degC), plus a Fronius Perfect Welding rectifier and the excellent Gullco International - Welding and Cutting Automation Kat buggy and magnetic track. Open environment. No vacuum chamber. No argon tent. No additional gas shielding. No sensors. These walls were built by Arc Additive Limited in our partner WB Alloys facility in Glasgow and are for our own testing requirements. Qualification material will have to have tighter control, and it will have, but not to the extent where we are lost in technical complications in the equipment that make things so much more difficult. In 2024 Directed Energy Deposition (DED) became airborne on Airbus. Replacing #forgings for flight-critical components with #AM ... guess what ... is pretty hard. However, the real life problems appeared to be surprising. I am looking forward to the Additive Manufacturing Forum I AM Forum Berlin and discuss with you Hype-Curve Management and persisting misconceptions about wire-based AM. We must share the same focus to commonly tackle actual industrial challenges. This Forum is a fantastic platform to do so. Together we make it fly!

We’re delighted to announce that DEEP Manufacturing has been awarded DNV approval in principle for use of Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) in the production of steel pressure vessels for human occupancy. This is a huge milestone on our journey to putting human habitats in the ocean. Pressure vessels are the structures within which people will live on our subsea habitats and it’s imperative that our production processes are rigorously reviewed and tested. We can’t think of anyone better to do that than the world’s leading classification society and recognized advisor to the maritime industry. We’re the only company in Europe with this approval in principle and we’re already in the process of working towards final DNV approval for the production of steel pressure vessels. COMPARING PRODUCTION RATES, ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING VS. OTHER PROCESSES I posted a recent video describing a 3D printing system for making Navy projectile housings, and how a factory using it might produce 600 rounds per day. A viewer describing himself as a competitive analyst wrote to ask what the comparison would be -- that is, the production rate to make the parts by their traditional method instead. On the one hand, this is exactly the right question. But on the other hand, the question is impossible to answer. The real production rate is output across a certain increment of time. For the established process, time varies considerably according to factors just outside of the production operations. Here is what I mean: The conventional method for those projectile housings is forging followed by machining. Forging involves a press and a die, and the machining is likely to be performed in a different location from the forge. So: ?? Does the forging die exist, or does this tooling need to be produced? If the latter, what is the lead time to get the tool? ???? Are the forging presses tooled up with dies ready to run this part, or do they need to be changed over? If the latter, what is the changeover time?? ?? Are the forging presses available to run this work, or are they committed to running other urgently needed parts before they can get to this job? If so, what is the wait? ?? Is the machine shop near or far from the forge? How much time needs to be allowed for queueing and shipping from one location to the other? And is the machine shop also ready to run these parts? In an ideal case -- that is, presses are tooled and ready to run, with machining on-site or very close -- forging would almost certainly be the more productive process. But military part buyers, along with part buyers everywhere, have to confront how often they accept real production rates or real lead times that are very different from the ideal. Additive is not necessarily the fastest process, but it is apt to be the MOST RESPONSIVE. That means it doesn't need to deliver the fastest rate. Where AM's production rate is credible, it can be the winning solution where the readiness of the competing solution highly varies.
