Project InnerSpace (InnerSpace) is a multi-phase initiative focused on accelerating global geothermal prospecting and development. InnerSpace is directed by Project InnerSpace, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to bringing interdisciplinary stakeholders together to enable development of geothermal energy anywhere in the world. InnerSpace is being led by Jamie Beard, an internationally recognized leader in the ‘geothermal anywhere’ movement, with the support of Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt. InnerSpace will serve as driver and convener of two global geothermal innovation and deployment sprints aimed at engaging the oil and gas industry and innovative startups in geothermal resource prospecting and development within an accelerated time frame. InnerSpace will also drive much-needed foundational studies that will inform its innovation sprints. The InnerSpace sprints will tackle specific obstacles to widespread geothermal development that are not efficiently addressed by standard organizational structures, and that would benefit society broadly in ways that industry cannot yet monetize. These include subsurface resource characterization to reduce pre-project risk, and funding for ‘first of their kind’ geothermal projects that are difficult to deploy utilizing existing funding mechanisms. By removing these obstacles through purposeful, targeted innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration, within this decade geothermal energy could be scaled into terawatts of output at a cost competitive with solar and wind.

Project InnerSpace is excited to launch today GeoMap India. ?????? The tool is a first-of-its-kind for India, mapping geothermal development potential by combining 175 subsurface and surface datasets, and identifying the most promising regions for geothermal development. The tool highlights the massive potential of untapped geothermal energy to become a crucial part of India’s clean energy mix as it seeks to spur economic growth and development by increasing energy supply. GeoMap? India highlights several regions in India that are particularly promising for geothermal development requiring higher temperatures, like for power and industrial heat production. These regions include: 1) Gujarat State on India’s west coast, including the area of the Southern Cambay Basin and the major industrial zone of Jhagadia; 2) Large areas of east and northeast India, particularly in the Bihar and Meghalaya States, 3) The Himalayan region of northwestern India; 4) Through the central Son Narmada Fault Zone, and 5) Along the eastern coast in the Andhra Pradesh State, along the Godavari rift, including the outskirts of Vijayawada, Andhra’s commercial hub. The tool also has some fun new features, like a data center layer that assists with prospecting for developers, and a coal plant conversion layer. In conjunction with the development of GeoMap India, InnerSpace partnered with Aarti Industries Ltd. to perform an industrial heat geothermal conversion study on one of its manufacturing facilities in a region of interest, and has launched with the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) and a group of local partners “The Future of Geothermal in India,” a comprehensive study focused on catalyzing geothermal energy production in India. The study will be published in 2025. Yesterday, I had the honor and privilege of hosting the Society of Petroleum Engineers - Oklahoma City Section Geothermal Workshop yesterday, stepping out of my comfort zone as emcee instead of presenter. We welcomed over 160 attendees, with many traveling from various states to join us at the beautiful Hamm Institute for American Energy! I’m deeply grateful to our presenters for their transparency and expertise. They brought depth and detail to discussions on geothermal operations, geology, and appraisal/development—key elements in understanding this innovative energy resource. Their insights truly brought the topic to life. We had insightful conversations about the intersection of the oil and gas industry with geothermal energy, and how decades of research, technology, and techniques in our field are shaping this space, with a special session from our own SPE CEO! It was inspiring to witness the shared enthusiasm and expertise in the room. A huge thank you to the SPE-OKC board for helping to make this event possible, Kyle Haustveit, P.E. for aligning speakers, and to the attendees for their valuable feedback. It was a day filled with learning, networking, and collaboration!
