Just published in The Journal of Orthopaedic Experience & Innovation, a new article by the research team run by Andrew Wickline that reviews a real-life multimodal post-operative swelling intervention protocol! From the article: "Post-operative dissatisfaction is often multifactorial with patients citing continued pain, decreased mobility, limited improvement in knee function and chronic swelling to be among the most common complaints. Acute tissue swelling after TKA can lead to overall patient discomfort, decreased joint range of motion (ROM), while lengthening the post-op recovery period. The purpose of this study was to compare patient outcome measures after the addition of an intraoperative anti-inflammatory bactericidal rinse, a post-operative cryocompression device, extended length oral tranexamic acid, and edema-controlling stockinette to previously published control group data." I've enjoyed checking out some new tech at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) meeting. This was one of the coolest devices I saw: Patient has a temporary tattoo applied to their knee and then an AI-powered smart phone app reads the data points (much like an iPhone reads a face on FaceID) and interprets knee range of movement and swelling. Patient receives the data which is really motivating for them but the surgeon also gets to remote monitor their patients and is alerted if anyone is not tracking as expected. This is definitely one simple but clever new tool which I'll be implementing in my practice. Inkwell Health Ltd. Jimmy Chow, MD
