We have centered our firm on the belief that access to safe housing is a human right and that all people should have access to great design. We are a firm that as a practice, have optimized for innovation, flexibility, and efficiency to deliver the best of what’s possible to those who have had the least access to it.

We're #hiring a new Designer. Join our team!
Now more than ever, access to housing that's affordable, healthy, connective, and inspiring is both an essential human right, and a much-needed foundation from which each and every person can bring the best of themselves in service to the community we share. This recognition of inherent value may be scarce in the current political rhetoric, but it must be abundant in our thoughts, words, and actions in these times. We've come to love the process of designing housing of all types and scales across our careers; from early days in getting market developers to make LEED certified buildings, to helping an ambitious sustainability brand make beautiful, nature-inspired buildings, to our now current melding of design, sustainability, and equity into affordable housing projects; great housing remains our passion and focus. Now 8 years old as a firm, and with 100 collective years of experience among us, we're celebrating what inspires us to keep digging deeper, and going farther to make great homes for our neighbors across the region! > 7 zero energy / ready projects > 20+ LEED gold / platinum certified projects > 3,200+ units of completed housing > International Living Futures Affordable Housing Pilot project > 200+ units of middle housing > Multiple innovative off-site modular construction projects completed or in process Here are some of our favorite projects and visions we've created, including some that will become reality this year! #AffordableHousing4All #HousingAffordability #HousingIsAHumanRight
In this time where our country seems to be backpedaling in ways that will negatively affect our already marginalized communities - we all keep doing the work that needs to be done. The year-round shelter for Beaverton is open and providing shelter and hope for a better future.
It's so clear that more and more people are being crushed by economic and social pressures beyond their control, and life is becoming unaffordable for more and more people. There is an obvious need for immediate response, including the need to make shelter available in various forms to meet people in their direct circumstances. There is a pressure inside of this to let speed and efficiency drive in order to alleviate real suffering, but it's also critical to push back against the feeling of scarcity that is so palpable and think about the larger impacts and implications of how we choose to act. There are so many examples of how common reactions end up exacerbating the problems they aim to solve, and that has historically been the case with shelter, too. An uninspiring, underinvested form of shelter buildings has long conveyed an implied social value that people don't deserve better because they can't afford better... It's time we compost that mindset and do better. Other responses are possible if we're willing to look for them, and we believe the new shelter we recently completed for the City of Beaverton provides some powerful examples. Because of partnership and shared vision, it leans into abundance in a multitude of essential ways; understanding that how a person feels inside their daily experience has perhaps the greatest impact on what is or isn't possible for their next day, and the next. It's understanding that traumatic experiences have profound effects, but they don't have to define a life. Read more here! https://lnkd.in/gxepqEbH #BetterShelter #TraumaInformedDesign
We're so excited that our Day Center design for Project Homeless Connect Washington County is in for permit and nearing construction! It's another awesome example of shelter space and services that embodies a sense of welcome to neighbors experiencing houselessness in Hillsboro. With a spacious front porch, abundant art, nature, and daylight; it demonstrates a real commitment to dignity and care for everyone in our community. #BetterShelter #TraumaInformedDesign

It's hard not to be shaken by what's happening right now; the fear, anger, anxiety we feel is valid and real. The incoming powers want to keep us in scarcity, scrapping in competition for our lives instead of thriving in cooperation. But our love is stronger than fear, and as Clarissa Pinkola Estes so wisely articulates, the ships we've been building were not meant to stay in safe harbors, we are made to sail the rough waters ahead. Now more than ever, it's time to lean into the strength of our relationships, to share and act on who and what we love, and to double our efforts to build the beloved community that MLK called us into. It's time to dissolve the artificial boundaries between us, especially those we most want to blame. To break the walls between "professional" and "personal", and align our whole lives to what actually matters. We can't drink money, and we can't live free while others are oppressed. Let's sail together, and trust the wisdom of the winds that flow among us all. https://lnkd.in/gPHmeypp

It's been a real pleasure to collaborate with Living Future's Affordable Housing Pilot Program, and to have our Timber Ridge project featured on their wonderful blog called Trim Tab which does so much to shed light on the path to the regenerative future we must be moving toward. Their lens and supportive resources have been immensely helpful, especially where it comes to finding healthier materials for affordable projects so that everyone can have less toxic exposure in their homes and in the environment. This incredible project is designed for zero-energy certification with no utility bills for residents (equity through sustainability), and we strived to implement as many aspects of the Living Building Challenge as possible through each aspect of design within the project's budget, even as it faced wave after wave of pandemic-driven difficulties. Equity and Sustainability are deeply linked, and we will continue to design projects that move ever farther from consumption, and ever closer toward regeneration; because there's no limit to what we can heal together. We truly hope every developer and architect does the same, and the Living Future community offers an incredible place to start! https://lnkd.in/gttTntQ6 #zeroenergy #zerocarbon #healthymaterials #regenerativedesign #biophilicdesign #affordablehousing
