Awarding €400,000 in grants to 10 public interest organisations to advance social justice in AI governance in Europe ?? We’re excited to announce 10 new grants to organisations working to?ensure social justice is central to the implementation of the European?AI Act: ANEC, BEUC - The European Consumer Organisation, Centre for Democracy & Technology Europe, epicenter.works, Federación de Consumidores y Usuarios CECU, Hermes Center Hacking for Human Rights and The Good Lobby Italia, Homo Digitalis, Lafede.cat, Open Future Foundation, The Danish Institute for Human Rights - International Activities and European Center for Not-for-Profit Law Stichting. ???? This outstanding group of consumer,?human rights, and tech justice?organisations will: ???? strengthen national?and European civil society networks, ???? make sure technical?standards comply with fundamental rights, and ???? empower creative workers against the unauthorised use of their work by generative AI companies. They were selected from 61 applications submitted through an?open call?and will receive grants of up to €60,000. The AI Act Implementation grants are part of our?€4m Making Regulation Work Programme?that challenges harms and secures accountability over the use of AI in Europe. As AI use by people, businesses and governments rapidly increases, this is a pivotal moment to protect people’s rights and hold AI makers and deployers accountable. Civil society’s engagement with governments and European institutions will shape the future—ensuring people can challenge unfair AI-driven decisions and preventing harmful AI products from flooding European markets. The impact of the regulation, however, will be determined by the capacity and resources our grantees and other public interest organisations secure to engage in its implementation and mobilise amidst a regulatory backlash. That’s why we’re stepping up to resource this time-sensitive work. ???? Learn more about the projects of our new grantees on our website: https://lnkd.in/ewps_iXw This work is possible thanks to the support of our funding partners: Adessium Foundation, AI Collaborative, an initiative of Omidyar Network, Mott Foundation, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, Fondation de France, Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, King Baudouin Foundation, Limelight Foundation, Luminate, Mozilla, Oak Foundation, Open Society Foundations, Porticus, Robert Bosch Stiftung, Stiftung Mercator GmbH and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation

A new grant alert for those interested in studying how AI affects work and workers!
**Great opportunity for early career researchers: Led by Michael Belinsky, Schmidt Sciences launched a new "AI at Work" program offering $200k grants for field experiments studying the impact of AI on work and workers. (Details in comment.) Huge opportunity to address the gaping holes in our understanding of how AI is *actually* impacting work. 5 partners -- MIT Shaping the Future of Work Initiative Ioana Marinescu John List Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) UNU-WIDER - United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research -- are leading the calls for proposals. Here are five ideas for experiments I hope are run: 1. How is AI impacting early career jobs? What happens when employers introduce time saving AI tools for junior workers in knowledge jobs? (Good ex: Hebbia is AI tool for junior analysts in finance, law, mgmt consulting, investment banking to save heaps of time on entry level knowledge work. See this podcast https://lnkd.in/ewf-eddr.) In firms that deploy it, what happens to employment (new hiring, head count, skills and roles), job satisfaction, work flows, pay, hours & advancement? 2. How is AI -- now -- impacting call center / customer service jobs? Erik Brynjolfsson's early paper on AI & call center workers shaped a positive narrative around AI boosting newest/ lowest performers. I fear the shift from early AI scripts --> virtual agents will have opposite effect: automating the straightforward calls that new/ less advanced workers take, and leaving the more complex calls to seasoned workers. I hope to see more experiments to unpack this. 3. Is AI leveling *up* or *down*? I would like to see studies exploring what happens when AI can substitute for some of the skills of a job -- and enable a less experienced/ trained worker to take on the role. (Ex: I recently heard ex of AI guiding an untrained worker to perform an ultrasound w/ as good results.) What is the result? Does the job/pay/level stay constant but less experienced worker can "level up" to a better position? Or does the job "level down" to lower pay commensurate with an employee w/ less experience? 4. When AI turbocharges managers, what happens to junior roles? I hear constantly a version of "AI is now so good, I no longer need an analyst/junior title on my team." As advances like Deep Research equip seasoned managers with powerful AI tools and agents, what happens to junior roles? Do they simply shift tasks? Or are they growing/shrinking in number? Is there evidence of a lawyer/assistant phenomenon: decades ago, law firms had ~1 assistant per lawyer. Now, lawyers use tech themselves to do much of that work -- they book their own travel/ write emails/ schedule meetings/type -- leading to 1 assistant per many lawyers. 5. Is there anything we can learn about AI's ability to mentor, coach and train workers on the job? Where and how does this work?

?Did you know? In the 2023 fiscal year, the NIH reviewed over 50,000 grant applications and awarded about 11,000 of these applications. Over 50% of the NIH budget authority goes towards research project grants. #grantfunding https://lnkd.in/gUVjRCSr
