We’re almost a week out from American Thanksgiving, so I want to provide some quick insight into what women’s work looks like over the coming days and weeks and how you can help. Our editorial team at InHerSight works to educate folks on the definition of work—paid and unpaid labor, i.e. your job-job versus your life tasks, such as child rearing, grocery shopping and cooking, budgeting, cleaning, etc. It’s important to recognize the value of both in order to achieve gender equity. On average, women spend an average of 49 minutes per day doing household chores, while men spend an average of just 19 minutes. In 2020, it was estimated that women contributed $10.9 trillion to the global economy in unpaid labor alone—more than twice the size of the global tech industry that same year. All that to say, over time, unpaid labor adds up. It also *eats up* time and focus from paid labor, something we know via experience and data: According to a 500-person survey we completed last month, 59% of women say thoughts about personal responsibilities (e.g., household tasks, family obligations) *often* distract their focus from work tasks. Another 28% say that mental load *sometimes* does. For those of us counting on our fingers right now, that’s a whopping 87% of women who are distracted while clocked in. Come holiday season, this experience is exacerbated. Cooking, cleaning, hosting, shopping, and the emotional labor associated with managing relationships and anticipating others’ needs weigh more heavily on women, even as more and more men begin to forge more equitable partnerships. (We genuinely love to see it. ??) Managers and employers—you can HELP, even if you aren’t invited to Thanksgiving dinner. You can: --Communicate that you understand both paid labor and unpaid labor are work, and they affect one another. --ASK employees what support they need in order to balance unpaid and paid work. Our data says women feel most comfortable in 1:1s with managers, so use that time to ask, ‘What is on your plate right now?’ (pun intended) and find a solution that works for both parties.? --Embrace flexible work hours. Encourage people to do their work when they have time.? --If possible, switch standing meetings to asynchronous Slack/Teams chats as the holidays ramp up. Meeting-free days allow people to regroup and recharge.? --Encourage employees to take paid time off and mental health days, or offer them company-wide yourself. Try framing them as “rest days” after the post-holiday blitz in order to help people realize that even if they had a great time with people they love, it’s okay to be tired. --Allow remote work where possible. As someone who’s lived in different cities from family for years, remote work makes holiday travel possible. What else would you add to this list? What support do you need from your employer or manager? Or drop your favorite recipe in the comments. Some of us ??♀? still don’t know what we’re bringing to dinner.

In our Pathfinder series, we’ve asked our partner companies to submit one woman “pathfinder” to represent their work, their products, their industry, or their values. Here, meet Kristine Stewart, Director of Product Marketing at VTS, who's forging a path that fulfills her love of SaaS product marketing with her love for her daughter and being a mom. Her career is evidence of why it’s important to speak up and speak out to propel your career. She says the trust and support she's received from managers has shaped how she wants to be perceived by her team: "I want to be human, available, and make work a bit more fun."
