What IS “Black Friday” anyway?? And, why am I doing it? Black Friday initially marked a single day in 1869 when the gold market crashed. In the 1960s, the Philadelphia Police Department claimed the term to describe the day after Thanksgiving when crowds began holiday shopping. In the 80s, retailers claimed Black Friday to describe a shift from losses (red) to profits (black). In the 2000s, it became a major shopping event that led to Small Biz Saturday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday. Today, it’s the busiest time of year. Customers delight in deep discounts and retailers get a boost in sales, clear inventory and aim to close the year on a high when shoppers are eager to spend.?Stores and websites get busy to meet the demand, and if you’ve ever worked retail, you likely had to work Black Friday and the weekend, either in store or online. That's the 'what' and the 'why'.???? Here's the thing: To deliver the frenzy of shopping after Thanksgiving, it makes everyone at the company really BUSY.?And every year, it gets busier and busier. For our tiny but mighty team, Black Friday takes a lot of time and focus away from moments of gratitude which doesn't give anyone the break I promised when I started this company 23 years ago. So this year, Ingrid+Isabel is opting out. There is no sale.? The team is off next week.? Our site will showcase a babbling brook (sound on). Mom can shop! There just won’t be media assets and programs to manage or pump through our site, social media, advertising and email. As a shopper, I love a discount! As a business owner, I love a break. As an employer, I love for my team to also take a break. Better for them and better for the company. So, on Black Friday and through the weekend after Thanksgiving, my team will be eating leftovers, watching movies, resting, recharging, and getting off of their laptops and phones to do work for the company. AND – because we too want to delight our customers, we did our deep discount THIS WEEK (think it's still running). Next week, we have our partnership moment with @EveryMotherCounts, 5 days of listening to a babbling brook, Cyber Monday when we will actually give product away (!!), and Giving Tuesday – when we’re back in the office. Cheers to more time for family, friends, and the moments that connect us to people we love. And, wishing everyone a season of warmth and intentionality. “There I was in my second trimester, standing in my closet, staring at the clothes I had outgrown. Out of desperation, I pulled a tube top over my unbuttoned jeans, and it worked. After nine months of prototyping, the Bellaband? was born.” -Ingrid Carney, Founder and CEO Mom-founded. Independently owned. Since 2001. We started with a simple goal: to keep you in your regular clothes longer. Now, we're collectively the largest maternity retail group in the US, and we’re reinventing maternity wear with styles that just work—whether you’re rocking a bump or not. Pregnancy doesn’t last forever but we do the wearing-testing, fit-obsessing, and thoughtful-designing to make sure your clothes do. More wear, less waste. WORK WITH US We’re a tight-knit, passionate team committed to putting moms first, giving back, and always learning. From our Founder+CEO Ingrid Carney.
"I’m Mexican." It took courage to say that at a work dinner sitting opposite my boss who had just told everyone at the table that if his daugther ever brings home a Mexican boyfriend, he'll tell everyone he’s Spanish. His response to me was, “Oh.” and he continued to eat while someone else changed the subject. That was 1998. I wasted years afraid of what people thought of me and what the label “Mexican-American” meant in America. From "Ryan" in the 6th grade who hollered across the school bus, “Ingrid, what does it feel like to be a Spic?” or when a boyfriend said he couldn’t tell his parents he had a Mexican girlfriend. Both times, I froze, processing their words, saying nothing back, and then slowly disguising myself as I got older. Was something wrong with me? No, of course not, but when you're in middle or high school, you don't know that. Today, I proudly say I’m Mexican, and raised our girls to proudly say the same. My parents and sister, my aunts, uncles and my cousins are all AMAZING people. I could not be more proud of who I am, where I come from, and all of my family, Oca?as and Chapa. I’m Mexican. And that’s pretty damn awesome. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month to us all. #hispanicheritagemonth #mexicanamerican #entrepeneur #femalefounder
