It was an honor to spend time this week at the 2024 Clinton Global Initiative and with Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton & Chelsea Clinton discussing a topic I am so passionate about: investing in women. ? I started Ingeborg Investments five years ago. Since then, I am proud to have backed 15 female fund managers who in aggregate manage more than $2.5B in AUM and to have invested in more than two dozen female-led companies, including Bobbie, Midi Health, Helaina, Zūm, Ellevest, Evvy, Julie Products Inc., The Mom Project, Hearth, Attn: Grace, Aunt Flow and Millie. At Ingeborg Investments,?we find it thrilling to see women starting businesses to serve women’s unmet needs. Their wins will help fuel the change we want to see in the world.?Our?three observations: 1.?????THE INTEREST IS REAL: we’re seeing the conversation getting louder and more visible on the need for innovations to improve every stage and facet of women’s lives – from hygiene to healthcare; from early career to retirement; from the morning after to motherhood to menopause. 2.?????THE MARKET OPPORTUNITY IS REAL: to give just one example: last fall, we put out a research report on investing in motherhood. The bottom line? Motherhood is a massive market – a $2 trillion investment opportunity in the United States alone.?And, don’t forget many studies show female founders outperform men. 3.?????THE STRUGGLE IS REAL: The venture industry is still overwhelmingly male. And that reality has consequences. Today, all-female founding teams still?receive just?2% of VC dollars. Incredibly, those numbers have barely budged in 15 years. In 2024, does anyone truly believe that women only?have?2% of great ideas?! The round, which brings Helaina’s equity funding to $83m, will support the market entry of human lactoferrin (brand name: effera), a protein in mammalian milk that Helaina is targeting at the women’s health, active nutrition and healthy aging markets. effera lactoferrin, which supports?iron homeostasis and metabolism,?immunity, and?microbiome health, is the first human lactoferrin to hit the market, and is being sold as a b2b ingredient to consumer brands in functional foods, beverages and supplements via strategic distribution partners. It will soon be available in several consumer products from brands including?Kroma Wellness,?The Feed,?Levelle Nutrition,?Healthgevity, and?Mitsubishi International Food Ingredients, Inc., says the firm, which has scaled production via contract manufacturers. Hirschhorn, Founder and CEO of Frida. This funding brings Gameto’s total capital raised to date to $73M. We are honored to have added the teams at Two Sigma, RA Capital, and others to our stellar investor base, and we are pleased to see increased investor confidence in our platform technology and a recognition of the pressing need for modern treatments in the historically underfunded women's health space, despite a challenging market. I believe that each small step we take in investing in women’s health can lead to a giant leap in medical breakthroughs and innovation. A fundraising round is not a milestone per se but a way to continue amplifying one’s work. I strongly believe that Gameto has strong foundational science, promising data, and a highly driven team and I am very excited about using these funds to continue amplifying our hard work. These funds will support our late stage clinical development in the United States, post-market surveillance outside the US, and the creation of a commercial operations function for our lead product candidate, Fertilo, which aims to improve IVF and egg freezing by reducing the number of hormone injections needed by maturing eggs outside the body in a dish. When I moved to New York City for the first time, I was considering my own egg freezing and I had a dream that a woman could freeze her eggs and do IVF without weeks of painful hormonal injections. It is unreal how far we have come. We have changed, learned a lot, and grown, but still have a long way to go.? This raise was a team effort and product of the hard work of all Gameto team members, board members and advisors.
