This has been an incredibly difficult decision, as the work we’ve done together over the past decade has been more than just a mission. Over the past 10 years, we have worked tirelessly to break down barriers to make the world more accepting, more accessible, and more inclusive. Your passion and dedication shaped everything we’ve accomplished, and we are forever grateful for your hard work and unwavering belief in our mission. The National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, IL, is offering a sensory-friendly morning known as "Ma?anas en el museo" on October 6, 2024, from 9:00 – 11:00 am. Funding opportunity! The American Library Association (ALA) has invited small and rural libraries to apply for funding to improve access for patrons with disabilities: https://lnkd.in/g4Kd9DgN In February 2024, ALA received an additional $10 million to support their initiative, with $7 million designated to be turned into $10,000 and $20,000 grants to the libraries. Applications can be submitted until December 11, 2024, with up to 300 libraries expected to receive funding. Selected libraries will receive financial support for their community engagement projects, training, resources, and ongoing technical assistance. Libraries are required to gather input from their communities that are made to support specific disability needs. This program is open to libraries located at least five miles from urban areas and serving populations of 25,000 or less. The Paris Paralympics of 2024 has showcased an array of incredible athletes and unforgettable moments, featuring standout sports events that were truly extraordinary. The games highlighted a range of captivating competitions that I had never seen before, including Boccia, Wheelchair Rugby, Blind Soccer, and Goalball, each presenting a unique and thrilling display of athleticism and skill. Throughout the Paris Summer Paralympics, I have had the privilege of watching an impressive roster of athletes from all around the globe, each demonstrating incredible talent and determination. Among these competitors, several standout performers have captured the spotlight with their exceptional achievements and inspiring performances, making the event even more memorable and impactful. Like Matt Stutzman, the American archer who won gold in Men's compound Archery, Fiona Howard who won gold in equestrian in her very first Paralympic debut, and Gabriel Geraldo dos Santos Araujo a Brazilian swimmer who won three gold medals for his event. And there were so many more amazing moments and people to remember. The Paralympics is truly worth watching, even for those who may not typically be interested in sports. As the Olympics featuring renowned athletes has been drawn to a close, the 2024 Paralympics has just commenced. The Paralympics showcases exceptional athletes with disabilities from around the world, whose competitions I believe have been overlooked by the media and deserve greater recognition now more than ever. The Paralympics aren’t just another sports event; they’re a game-changer for how we see ability and disability. They challenge us to rethink what’s possible and push for a world where everyone gets a fair shot. When we tune in and support these games, we’re backing a movement that’s all about breaking down barriers and celebrating every kind of talent. Plus, the stories from the Paralympics are beyond inspiring. They spark conversations about accessibility and inclusivity that go way beyond the games themselves. By giving the Paralympics the spotlight, we’re helping to make sure these important issues stay front and center. InfiniTeach member Ned Williams attended a presentation and training course for the Illinois Restaurant Association, Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association, and Choose Chicago hosted by the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD). The goal was to help create more accessible spaces for people with disabilities when attending restaurants. This event was so important that Ned shared why such initiatives matter to people with disabilities. As an autistic adult, accessing some venues and experiences can be a challenge. That is why having venues that can accommodate various disabilities is so important. Currently, Chicago’s Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) is taking steps to ensure accessibility for all disabilities, including autism, throughout the city. This is very important, not just for me, but for everyone with a disability who lives in, or visits Chicago. If a city prides itself on supporting accessibility, people with disabilities will feel included and want to come to experience what the city has to offer. This becomes even more important when major events like the Democratic National Committee come to the city. Because when the number of people increases, so do those people who have a disability in the city. Even in a city that prides itself on supporting disabilities, everyone still needs to play their part in being inclusive. Making sure that businesses have accessibility in mind in all aspects is one key part. If businesses are accessible to people with disabilities then everyone benefits. If people with disabilities can access available services and businesses it brings more money into the city to make a better experience for everyone.
