This year, Indy Humane Summer Camp is offering two exciting camps designed to inspire and educate the next generation of animal advocates. ?? Youth Camp (Ages 8-12) focuses on: Animal Adventure – Daily hands-on interactions with our shelter pets while learning about responsible care. Creative Cats & Canines – Help our shelter pets unleash their inner artists and leave your mark by decorating a ceiling tile to hang in our shelter! Future Shelter Expert – Learn about the departments that keep Indy Humane running and saving lives. Game Time – Join in fun group games, including our camp tradition: Where's My Chicken? FUREVER Friendships – Meet other kids who love animals just as much as you! Animal Advocates – Play a role in helping shelter pets find their forever homes. ?? Teen Camp (Ages 13-15) dives deeper into: Advanced Training & Shadowing – Work directly with our dogs on clicker training and observe our shelter in action. For the past 10 weeks, we've been treating Satine for Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD)—a painful autoimmune disease affecting large breed puppies. Her case was especially severe, impacting her joints and even her ribs. At one point, she was so sick she required hospitalization, tube feedings, and IV pain management—we weren't sure if she would survive. ?? But we didn't give up on her—and neither did our dedicated veterinary team, including Marissa Ramon, our current Purdue extern! ???? Thanks to our strong partnership with Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine, clinical-year vet students get hands-on experience in shelter medicine, working alongside our team to provide life-saving care. Marissa has been instrumental in Satine's recovery and may even be her future adopter! Not only do we save lives, but we help train the next generation of veterinarians—ensuring they gain essential experience in surgical and medical cases. Many of our externs, like Marissa, go on to work in shelter medicine, making an even bigger impact in our community! Satine is now back to being a happy, playful puppy, and we couldn't be more grateful for our team and partners who helped her heal. Our team doesn't wait to jump in and save lives, we do it right away (whether we can secure funding or not). When Milo arrived at IndyHumane, he was in rough shape—to put it lightly. With a broken leg and a severely injured eye, likely from trauma, he was in pain and needed urgent medical care. His owner made the heartbreaking decision to surrender him, knowing he needed more help than she could provide. At IndyHumane, we don't wait until we have the funds raised to say ‘yes'—we act immediately. Milo's surgeries to remove his damaged leg and eye were estimated to cost well over $1,000, but delaying wasn't an option. Our team jumped into action, knowing that his chance at a pain-free life depended on it.
