The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir is thrilled to welcome Julie Query as the organization’s Director of Audience Engagement and Development! Julie comes to us with years of experience in communications, content creation, and community engagement, a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish with minors in French and English (Creative Writing) from Butler University, and a Certificate of Achievement from the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. While new to this role, she is no stranger to the organization; she has been assisting us with multiple projects since September, and in 2015, she sang with the Choir for three seasons, including the ISC’s tour to New York City to sing Mohammad Fairouz’s Zabur at Carnegie Hall! Julie says, “When I look at my singing career, I can trace every step back to the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir – all the way down to my own musicianship, which I largely owe to Artistic Director Eric Stark’s tireless musical excellence. I had only decided to seriously pursue music a year prior to my audition, and it was singing in the ISC that truly solidified that path and completely changed my life. What makes the ISC special (among many, many things) is that my story isn’t unique; the Choir has been changing lives for a long time (87 years to be exact!), and I am so excited to see how we can involve our entire community in that life-changing work together.” Often nicknamed a “Disney princess soprano”, Julie grew up listening to music on the oldies station, watching Golden Age musicals on repeat, and having every ‘90s movie musical memorized word for word. The beginning of her relationship with classical music came when she started figure skating at the age of six, where she first fell in love with music of Puccini, Ravel, Alwyn, Tchaikovsky, and many more. In 2017, she began graduate study at Butler University for her Master’s in Vocal Performance, during which she performed in several operas, including Suor Angelica, The Old Maid and the Thief, and Hansel and Gretel as the Witch. She also sang with Indianapolis Opera for four seasons, made her house and role debut with Toledo Opera in 2022, her professional musical theater debut in Carousel, and performed a benefit concert at the Indiana Historical Society to raise funds for cancer research. She frequently performs with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Pops Chorus and sings as a soloist in several churches across Indiana. In her free time, she loves to read, take ballet, and spend time with her many cats. We are so grateful for Julie’s passion and dedication to the ISC, and we can’t wait to make our mission go even further together. Please leave Julie a warm welcome in the comments!?

Join us Sunday, April 14th at 3pm for Voices of the Spirit, featuring the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, under the direction of Eric Stark, and organist David Duncan in a performance of Duruflé's Requiem, Op. 9! Ethereal, mysterious, and hopeful, Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem combines the mystical beauty of Gregorian chant and the delicate shades of 20th century musical impressionism. His uplifting creation has become one of the most deeply cherished and beloved works of the 20th century. Though the composer-organist Duruflé published multiple versions of this work including for orchestral accompaniment, the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir presents this performance in its most intimate and transformative version, for chorus and organ alone. Set in the acoustically and visually stunning St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the performance is sure to be one treasured by all for years to come.
