PoliMOVE Autonomous Racing Team made history in 2022 with the Indy Autonomous Challenge, securing the fastest speed record by an autonomous racecar NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Shuttle Landing Facility. The innovation now continues on Italian soil, where PoliMOVE has recently achieved an unprecedented milestone with a production car, the Maserati MC20. This groundbreaking test further proves how autonomous driving technology is no longer just a concept but a tangible reality, poised to revolutionize both high-speed racing and urban mobility. #IndyAutonomousChallenge #AutonomousDriving #Innovation #Polimove #FutureOfTransport
At the Piacenza-San Damiano Airport, the AIDA team, together with PoliMOVE Autonomous Racing Team, a group of researchers specializing in autonomous driving for race cars, has further raised the bar for autonomous driving experimentation. Transitioning from road contexts, the high-speed tests conducted at 285 km/h aimed to demonstrate the robustness of the algorithms, confirming their reliability regardless of the context, even at extremely high speeds. The first experiment, held in the United States on NASA’s Cape Canaveral track, awarded Polimove the title of record holder for the fastest speed achieved by an autonomous race car. For the first time, we brought the experimentation to Italian soil, achieving an unprecedented milestone for a production car. This new test confirms how tangible autonomous driving technology has become, ready to evolve into a reality, whether applied to high-speed scenarios or urban contexts. It is impossible not to mention the support of MOST, the strategic partner of the AIDA project and a co-pilot in these activities. #aida #polimi #polimove #guidaautonoma #ai #autonomousdriving #università

We just open-sourced trace-driven tooling developed to analyze the Cavalier Autonomous Racing stack. This new tooling can analyze traces 20x to 50x faster, depending on the analysis type. This tooling is based on the work of ROS 2 traces which uses LTTng tracepoints to log key events in any Robot Operating System (ROS) C++ node. However, the existing suite of trace analysis tools were 5 times slower than real-time for analyzing profiles of a single node. A rewrite was clearly needed. ROS2 Tracing C++ is a GitHub repository with a subset of the common analysis techniques for analyzing ROS nodes with trace-driven techniques, but written in C++ to be far more performant. ROS 2 Tracing C++ GitHub Repository: https://lnkd.in/gGiFYGMx Using this data, I was able to quantify improvements in the Q95 latency — the worst 5% of execution times — of a critical system component by a staggering 75%. This was done with a few focused optimizations, namely: - Reserving vector space in advance based on estimated final sizes - Switching from push_back to emplace_back for more efficient memory handling - Using single precision instead of double precision floating-point values - Eliminating unnecessarily published DDS topics To pinpoint these opportunities, I used perf for performance traces and visualized them with a flame graphs. Callback durations were also tracked using ROS 2 tracing, which gave us a deeper look into the system's timing behavior. I've included a before-and-after graph to highlight the performance improvements. If you are interested in trace analysis more generally, and do not have a specific performance requirement, I would recommend checking out tracing the ROS 2 tracing repository.
