Last week, Chair Kyle Stavig and Executive Director Matt Mlynarczyk traveled to Japan to represent ISDI at the 2024 ICDM Board of Directors Meeting. Led by AOSD Secretary General Joe Hirokawa, they traveled from Kyoto with SEFA Secretary General J?rg H?ppner for a special tour of Nippon Steel Drum Co., LTD.’s shiny new plant to learn more about Japanese steel drum manufacturing techniques. The following day, the ICDM representatives reconvened for the annual board meeting with an emphasis on substantial discussions concerning technical and regulatory issues of interest to steel drum manufacturers represented by ICDM’s member associations. After a long day of back-to-back meetings, our AOSD hosts provided attendees with a cultural tour of Kyoto before dinner. This week, our visit to the Rochester Institute of Technology was an enriching experience as we engaged with packaging science students and faculty to discuss the advantages of sustainable, safe, and secure steel drums. We highlighted how steel drums, being highly recyclable, contribute significantly to reducing environmental impact while maintaining durability and safety in packaging solutions. Through interactive sessions, we addressed the importance of integrating sustainable practices within the industry and showcased how steel drums offer a reliable option for transporting various goods securely. The enthusiasm and insightful questions from the students and faculty alike underscored a shared commitment to advancing sustainable packaging innovations. The Industrial Steel Drum Institute (ISDI) represents new steel drum manufacturers in North America. It is also a member of the International Confederation of Drum Manufacturers (ICDM), a federation of trade associations that represent steel drum manufacturers worldwide. In addition to ISDI, ICDM is comprised of the Asia-Oceanic Steel Drum Manufacturers Association (AOSD) and the European Association of Steel Drum Manufacturers (SEFA). Collectively, our member companies manufacture approximately 250 million sustainable steel drums annually. Fusible plugs are drum closures made of impact-resistant nylon, polyethylene, or polypropylene. It’s well known that steel drums perform well in extreme temperatures, humidity and pressure variations. But when equipped with fusible plugs and paired with an adequately designed foam-water sprinkler system, steel drums are extremely safe for flammable and combustible products, even under fire conditions. Shippers that use steel drums to transport hazardous materials are sometimes questioned about certain aspects of their United Nations (UN) drums, even though they are fully-compliant with all international and Hazardous Material Regulations. The question asked most often is how the UN mark is applied to each drum. Steel drum manufacturers have used several methods to display the UN mark on drums. It can be stamped, embossed, burned, printed or otherwise marked on a drum to provide adequate accessibility, permanency, contrast, and legibility so it is clearly visible and easily understood. The 55-gallon industrial steel drum is a workhorse that facilitates the safe storage and transportation of goods. And because steel is 100% recyclable, it can be recycled into the same material of the same quality again-and-again. A steel drum can become another steel drum, or a refrigerator, or a car hood.
