?? New Research Alert: Strengthening Maritime Domain Awareness in the Indo-Pacific ?? by James JB Park, Non-Resident Fellow at the Indo-Pacific Studies Center. The Indo-Pacific's maritime security landscape is increasingly complex, and Captain James JB Park’s latest paper, "Maritime Security and Strategy of the Indo-Pacific: Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain and Awareness (IPMDA)," provides a timely, strategic analysis of these dynamics. Non-Resident Fellow at the Indo-Pacific Studies Center, and a 2024 James A. Kelly Korea Studies Fellow and Captain Park explores key issues impacting maritime security, including: The strategic importance of the South China Sea, where approximately 30% of global maritime trade and 15 million barrels of oil daily flow, underscoring its economic and geopolitical significance. The heightened tensions surrounding Freedom of Navigation Operations (FONOPs) in the region, particularly as the U.S. and QUAD nations address regional stability in response to China's expanding maritime activities. Recommendations for enhancing the IPMDA and addressing challenges from “dark shipping” and the deployment of maritime militias, essential for supporting a normative, inclusive international maritime order. This paper is essential reading for policymakers, defense strategists, and stakeholders in Indo-Pacific security.
