At the core of Indigenous Dermatology is a deep commitment to bringing high-quality, culturally sensitive dermatologic care to Indigenous communities across North America. And that mission starts with Dr. Anna Chacon—a board-certified dermatologist dedicated to making dermatology accessible, no matter how remote the location. From Miami to the Alaskan Bush, Dr. Chacon has traveled across the country (and the world) to serve patients in places where medical care is often out of reach. As the first and only dermatologist to work in the Alaskan Bush, she flies on bush planes to reach some of the most rural and underserved areas, providing life-changing dermatologic care to Indigenous communities. Her passion extends beyond in-person visits—she’s also licensed in all 50 states, making teledermatology an accessible option for those who need it most. ?? Stay tuned as we introduce the incredible team behind this mission! You won’t want to miss it! #indigenousskincare #skincomplications #diversityinmedicine #skincaretip

?? Bacterial Skin Infections in Rural Communities: What You Need to Know! During my visits to Indigenous communities, I often see bacterial skin infections like toe web infections, impetigo, and cellulitis—conditions that can worsen without proper care. Many of these communities lack access to dermatologic treatment, making education and culturally sensitive care essential. Let’s work together to ensure everyone can access the care they deserve! ? Honoring Indigenous Traditions of Love While Valentine's Day is widely celebrated, many Indigenous communities have their own rich traditions that honor love, connection, and community. For instance, the Mojave tribe in California celebrates February 14 with traditional bird dancing and bird songs, fostering unity and shared cultural expression. In Indigenous cultures, love extends beyond romantic relationships; it encompasses self-love, familial bonds, and deep connections with the community and the land. Practicing self-love is a process that involves caring for your emotional, spiritual, physical, and mental health. This Valentine's Day, let's draw inspiration from these traditions to cultivate self-love and strengthen our communities. How do you celebrate this meaningful day, or what does self-love mean to you? Share in the comments below! Follow us @indigenousdermatology for more insights into Indigenous traditions. #indigenoushealth #dermatology #selflove #valentinesday

?? What sparked my journey to the most remote corners of Alaska? It all began with a leap of curiosity that turned into a life-changing mission. Working with Indigenous communities has taught me that true care isn’t just about prescriptions—it’s about listening, adapting, and honoring traditions. In my latest article, I share how these experiences shaped my approach to dermatology and why I started a newsletter to bring these lessons to you. ?? Winter can be harsh for individuals with rosacea, especially for those with ethnic skin. Sudden temperature changes, cold winds, and low indoor humidity can strip skin of moisture and trigger flare-ups. ?? Why It Matters for Ethnic Skin: Hyperpigmentation and visible redness may appear differently on darker skin tones. Ethnic skin also tends to lose moisture more easily, so extra care during winter is essential. ?? Top Tips to Protect Your Skin: 1?? Hydrate & Moisturize: Use a fragrance-free, ceramide-rich moisturizer on damp skin to lock in hydration. A humidifier can also counter dry indoor air. 2?? Gentle Skincare Routine: Avoid harsh cleansers and exfoliants; lukewarm water is your friend! 3?? Shield Your Skin: Wear a scarf outdoors to guard against the cold and wind. Apply sunscreen daily—even in winter! 4?? Control Triggers: Limit spicy foods, hot drinks, and alcohol, as they can worsen redness. 5?? Manage Stress: Practice mindfulness or yoga, as stress can exacerbate symptoms. 6?? Consult a Pro: A dermatologist can tailor a winter skincare plan to meet your unique needs. Let’s keep your skin calm and glowing this season! ??Share your winter skincare tips below. ?? #rosacea #wintertips #sensitiveskin
