“I think the big thing is realizing that Native Americans aren't only confined to history books. We are still present [and] active in communities,” Lilly said. “We're normal people, we have a history, and we're still here.” Supporting connections between Indigenous Peoples and higher education is a huge opportunity. Kudos to the University of Virginia's Native American Student Union for having these conversations all year round! Many universities are also establishing tribal relations liaisons like UVA, whose institution is located on MONACAN INDIAN NATION, INC. ancestral grounds and serves Native students. They are supporting more regular relations, conversations and communication with tribal governments and citizens. Is your institution one of them? Are you thinking about how to support building tribal capacity and resilience in open-hearted ways? Please share with us! https://lnkd.in/e-Nf_SbH #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #highereducation

Fantastic session yesterday at the Chesapeake Bay Funders Network on how philanthropy can support efforts to build tribal capacity! Thank you to Chief Anne Richardson of the Rappahannock Tribe, Kitcki Carroll of United South and Eastern Tribes and Leah Salgado at the Weissberg Foundation for a fantastic conversation. Thank you to Tory Dietel Hopps, Ann C. Mills, and Megan McPherson (Milliken) for creating such a wonderful platform and accommodating this virtual conversation at your session. We discussed #sovereignty and how easy and complex it is in concept and practice, #Indigenous-models of care and kinship with the natural world that all of us are a part of, and the importance of #philanthropy giving unrestricted funds directly to Tribal Nations and native-led institutions and moving money wholescale across grant-making and INVESTING to support Indigenous communities by investing in Indigenous businesses, native CDFIs. Here are some resources shared by the group: 1) USET's reading list compiled for #NativeAmericanHistoryMonth (and every month): https://lnkd.in/edNiEe2K 2) Nonprofit Quarterly: How Understanding Endowments is Key to Liberating Philanthropy: https://lnkd.in/eNF-fuPm 3) Indian Country 101(A self-paced training program on sovereignty built for non-native folks): https://lnkd.in/gVvQcHQr

Congratulations to Chief Anne Richardson of the Rappahannock Tribe on your Conservation Visionary Award last week! It is wonderful to see Indigenous leadership from across Turtle Island recognized on an international stage!! #leadership #Indigenous #ILCN2024 #conservation #LandBack
Congratulations to Mandy Gull-Masty and Anne Richardson who each received a Conservation Visionary Award yesterday at the International Land Conservation Network 2024 Global Congress (#ILCN2024)! * Mandy Gull-Masty is Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee)/Cree Nation Government and Chairperson of the Cree Nation Government. She has championed her people’s interests throughout her career and advocated for centering Cree values and leadership in the expansion of conservation lands across Eeyou Istchee (the Cree homeland). She played a key role in the Cree Nation’s collective efforts to protect more than 39,000 square kilometres in Eeyou Istchee. * Anne Richardson is Chief of the Rappahannock Tribe. She was recognized for her leadership in returning her tribe to its ancestral lands along the Rappahannock River in Virginia, USA, and preserving—in perpetuity—their natural and cultural importance. She is now leading an effort to rematriate ~650 hectares of Fones Cliffs, the Tribe’s ancestral homelands, and protect them for their cultural heritage and as important habitat for wildlife including bald eagles and waterfowl. Thank you to the Chickahominy Indian Tribe for serving as the host for the first Virginia Tribal Nations GIS Summit! We welcomed teams from Esri's Native Nations program and members of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to share resources and best practices in sitting, standing up, and dancing with data! Thank you to all of our Tribal Nation members who were able to join us from the Chickahominy Indian Tribe, the CHICKAHOMINY INDIANS-EASTERN DIVISION INCORPORATED, Nansemond Indian Nation, and the Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe! Special thanks to Dolores Buljevic (she/her), Katie Kolcusky and Jennifer Rapp for your presentations and support throughout the process. We appreciated the wisdom and knowledge you shared with us and the opportunity to build tribal capacity in ways that advance Indigenous data sovereignty! We brainstormed ways to continue to build our relationship and expand access to technical tools in ways that we look forward to sharing in the future! #Indigenous #data #sovereignty #GIS
