Job Seekers, here are some portfolio oopsies I've seen this week and how you can avoid them! - Portfolio links not working! This is the biggest one I see, whether it's heading straight to a "404" or in one case was a link to (myartstation/projects) not the profile URL. I'm a great internet sleuth, but even I can't always guess an exact weblink. Double check your links, make sure they're correct and work! Nothing's worse than sending out your portfolio and realizing later that nobody could actually see your awesome work. - Passwords for non NDA stuff. If you're locking your entire portfolio behind a password, short of mashing a keyboard and growling "I'm in", I'm not going to be able to assess your work. (Some of you may like it that way, in which case that's fine, ignore this one) If you want to be found, be discoverable. Remember, if hiring managers are reviewing potentially hundreds of applicants, they will potentially be looking for ways to trim the numbers down to a more manageable workload. - Kill your darlings. Some portfolios have every single piece of work ever done in the individual's career history. Often because more is seen as better, but it can actually be more harmful. If you've got work of differing qualities due to your progression over time, it'll seem inconsistent and the lower quality pieces of work will detract from the shine of the best pieces. It's far better to have, say, your 5 best pieces of art or samples on your portfolio than have them hidden amongst 25 other pieces of historical stuff. After all, if you have only the 5 best up there, then it's going to be judged that that's your bar of work quality. Don't you want that as high as possible? - Show your working. Give context to your work, use things like the STAR method to explain what you did, what components of the work are yours, challenges overcome and how it contributed as a whole. People will be making assessments, whether consciously or not, on how you can fit into their pipelines, so make that as easy for them as possible. - Make it easy to navigate. If your portfolio is a maze, people might get lost before they find your best stuff. We don't all have a ball of yarn and the ability to take out a Minotaur. Keep it simple! Group similar projects together, make sure it's easy to find different types of work. If it's a pain to navigate, assessors could give up and move on to the next portfolio. Remember, your portfolio is often your first impression in the industry. It's worth taking the time to make sure it's showing you off in the best light possible. I get TONS of requests daily, for free portfolio reviews. I occasionally do a couple but honestly, it's not scalable, which is why I give out as much free advice either in the form of these posts, or events like "The Takeaway ft Tim" on the Indie Game Academy Discord.
