The Upper White River Watershed is a crucial source of freshwater for many Indiana residents, including those in Indianapolis. This marks the seventh year ISA and ICMC have overseen the Upper White Cover Crop Program, which allows farmers in the watershed to try out cover crops with the goal of meeting nutrient and sediment reduction goals. On Aug. 13, farmers and industry representatives gathered for the Upper White Cover Crop Program Field Day on Joe Hamilton’s farm near Muncie, to share results and compare findings. Tipton County Farmer Tom McKinney says conservation efforts take time but they’re worth it. “If you talk to a farmer who is no-tilling or implementing other conservation practices, they will tell you it takes a few years of changing the biology of the soil to see yield results,” he said. “We’re getting there." Read about his experience implementing cover crops, a no-till system for soybeans, and a strip tillage system for corn: https://lnkd.in/g47YiKDT #sustainability #conservation #covercrops #soilheatlh

A Corn Research Book by Purdue Extension Corn Specialist Dan Quinn provides valuable data to help farmers improve practices. “We do upwards of 40-50 research trials around the state yearly,” he said. “This book is a condensed version of various studies, sharing yield results, economic results, soil test results and more. It’s about giving farmers a chance to see if there’s something they can try on their own farms.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/esep-BTP

Today, farmers and staff representing Indiana Soybean Alliance and Indiana Corn Marketing Council participated in the Lockup briefing at the USDA to hear firsthand the results of the August Crop Production and World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) reports. Market-sensitive reports are prepared by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Agricultural Statistics Board (ASB) and then protected through security conditions - known as Lockup - to ensure there is equal access to the information once it’s released. The August crop report is a key indicator for farm commodity analysts because it’s released just weeks ahead of harvest. Ed Ebert, senior director of market development with ISA/ICMC, discusses the results. #cropreport #usda
