Our #IUSPHB Health & Wellness Design faculty member Bill Ramos, Ph.D. keeps making waves! Thanks in large part to the #mentorship of Dr. Ramos, Gilman School junior Ashton Christo was able to successfully introduce “Splash Ahead: Teaching Skills, Saving Lives” #watersafety program this past summer for underserved kids in his Baltimore, MD community. Christo had read about Dr. Ramos’ work as a member of the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council and took the initiative to reach out via email earlier this year. “I thought it was great to get an email from a young person in high school wanting to make a difference,” says Dr. Ramos. “I spent 15 years in the K-12 system, and I have a passion for anything young people want to get started and be involved in. To know Ashton had already chosen water safety as a focus was very cool.” Christo and Dr. Ramos are currently working together to bring Splash Ahead back for the summer of 2025 at Gilman, as well as possible expansion to other schools in the Baltimore area. Congratulations Eric Walsh-Buhi!
The cancer center's Eric Walsh-Buhi, PhD, was awarded more than $500,000 from the National Institutes of Health to study skin cancer prevention on social media. Dr. Walsh-Buhi’s project aims to understand the social media landscape for skin cancer content and then develop scientifically backed posts tailored for these young digital natives. The goal? Meet them on the platforms they use most—Instagram, Twitter/X, and Facebook—with life-saving prevention tips. Learn more: https://ow.ly/jN0050U5lxQ. #ResearchCuresCancer

#IUSPHB is proud to share Michelle Del Rio, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of IU Environmental & Occupational Health was only one of three professionals statewide to receive the “Elevated Latinos Under 40” designation by the Indiana Latino Institute. Given Dr. Del Rio’s significant contributions to the study of #leadexposure in Indiana households and home safety, it is no surprise that the Indiana #Latino Institute Leadership Circle chose to highlight her for this honor. Dr. Del Rio is also a member of American Public Health Association (APHA) Children’s Environmental Health Committee and has developed courses at IU based around this topic. “We are incredibly proud of Michelle and excited for this recognition,” shares EOH Chair Patricia Silveyra, Ph.D. “She is an outstanding educator and researcher who truly represents our department’s values, mission, and excellence.” Read more: https://go.iu.edu/8ryV

The recent #Sports, #Hospitality, & #Recreation Career Fair hosted by the IU Office of Career Services was a tremendous success according to Director of Employer Relations Amanda Zwissler, drawing 450 students who were well-prepared to engage with top-tier industry employers. The event showcased a diverse array of companies, including the Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Pistons, Marriott International, and Meetings & Incentives Worldwide, Inc. while also offering students a valuable opportunity to explore #career paths, #internships, and #full-time positions within their chosen fields. Zwissler acknowledges the pivotal role faculty and staff played in the event's success, many incorporating this important event into their classroom experiences and prepping students accordingly. This #collaboration ensured that attendees not only recognized the significance of the event but were also equipped to make a positive impact on potential employers. With a #dynamic atmosphere and students who were ready to make the most of this opportunity, the day proved to be productive and rewarding for all involved. #BringOnTomorrow

This year’s theme for #WorldAntimicrobialAwarenessWeek, “Educate. Advocate. Act Now,” highlights the urgent need to combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). AMR occurs when infections become resistant to treatment, posing a serious threat to #globalhealth. Let’s educate ourselves and others about AMR, advocate for responsible use of antimicrobials, and take concrete actions to reduce the spread of #drug-resistant infections. Read more about how #IUSPHB faculty like Eduardo Ximenes are taking major steps to combat AMR: https://go.iu.edu/8r8K #AMRPrevention #GlobalHealth #FightAMR #WAAW
