#IUSPHB is very proud of Miriam Jocelyn Rodriguez, Ph.D., who was awarded a five-year K23 Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) in the amount of $900k to help fund vital research to effectively support #Hispanic caregivers nationwide for loved ones diagnosed with #Alzheimer’s disease and related #dementias (ADRD). This award will fund her project entitled, “Cultural adaptation of a mobile caregiver intervention for Hispanic dementia caregivers.” Dr. Rodriguez will work directly with her mentors Health & Wellness Design Department Chair Richard J. Holden, Ph.D. and Malaz Boustani, M.D. from Indiana University School of Medicine on adapting dementia care mobile #telehealth app Brain CareNotes to the specific needs of Hispanic communities in the U.S. Dr. Rodriguez will also work with department colleague and co-mentor Nicole Werner, Ph.D. on the qualitative aims of her research; ensuring Hispanic caregivers can provide #real-world input to tailor the app to effectively meet their specific needs. “I have seen first-hand the struggle even in my own family on handling an #ADRD diagnosis,” shares Dr. Rodriguez, who is also an active member of the Indiana University Bloomington SACNAS chapter. She recently gained #leadership experience at the annual SACNAS convention with Patricia Silveyra (pictured below) held in Phoenix, AZ earlier this month. “It has really motivated me to find solutions for Hispanics because it is really a struggle for this population.” Learn more: https://go.iu.edu/8rEZ

With overdose deaths still claiming the lives of over 2,000 #Hoosiers annually, three out of four of those deaths are linked to opioids. Cris Henderson, MA, MPH, a research associate for Prevention Insights at #IUSPHB’s Department of Applied Health Science at Indiana University-Bloomington is helping to make a difference. As project director of the Citizen Opioid Responders (COR) program, Cris trains individuals to recognize the signs of opioid #overdoses and administer #naloxone (Narcan), a life-saving drug that can reverse an overdose. "We want to get naloxone in the hands of more people, even those who may not have a loved one who they may know is suffering from #opioid use disorder or misusing drugs,” Henderson said. The online, free training course takes just 30 minutes to complete and is designed for everyone—whether you have a loved one struggling with #addiction or simply want to be ready in case of an emergency. Thanks to a $23,500 grant from the Indiana University Foundation, the program is already expanding across Indiana and is now available at multiple IU campuses - including Indiana University Bloomington - and in several counties across the state. For Americans ages 18–45, the leading cause of death is fentanyl overdose. Naloxone (Narcan) is a safe and effective way to combat this epidemic, but it only works if people know how to use it. The Citizen Opioid Responders (COR) program offers free, online training to teach you how to: recognize signs of an opioid overdose; administer naloxone effectively; and respond confidently to save lives in an emergency. Our #IUSPHB Health & Wellness Design faculty member Bill Ramos, Ph.D. keeps making waves! Thanks in large part to the #mentorship of Dr. Ramos, Gilman School junior Ashton Christo was able to successfully introduce “Splash Ahead: Teaching Skills, Saving Lives” #watersafety program this past summer for underserved kids in his Baltimore, MD community. Christo had read about Dr. Ramos’ work as a member of the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council and took the initiative to reach out via email earlier this year. “I thought it was great to get an email from a young person in high school wanting to make a difference,” says Dr. Ramos. “I spent 15 years in the K-12 system, and I have a passion for anything young people want to get started and be involved in. To know Ashton had already chosen water safety as a focus was very cool.” Christo and Dr. Ramos are currently working together to bring Splash Ahead back for the summer of 2025 at Gilman, as well as possible expansion to other schools in the Baltimore area.
