Dreams do come true!
I am incredibly honored and beyond grateful to share that I will be starting my surgical training with none other than Indiana Surgery - Indiana Univ School of Medicine!
This milestone, I believe, would not have been possible without God’s divine grace. I owe it to the unwavering love and support of my family, esp Ammi and Baba who have been my anchor and my sail throughout this journey. I also owe it to my mentors who have provided invaluable guidance and constant support at every step of the way.
As the first-ever applicant from my medical school to pursue a match in surgery, I had my doubts but was passionately motivated. It came with a lot of challenges, esp that the path was unseen, untrodden, with no blueprint to follow. I set out to carve out a path for myself.
‘It takes a village’, they say. It truly does, I now believe it. I had the extraordinary opportunity to work with Dr Saleem Islam whose mentorship over 2 years helped me build a solid foundation in research and instilled in me a passion for academic surgery - one that I will continue to pursue. To Dr Sohail Khan, MD,MHCM, whose natural ability to inspire a ‘nothing is impossible’ mindset transformed the way I approach every challenge - I hope to never let it fade off. And to the Aga Khan University's Centre for Innovation in Medical Education - CIME, if I can confidently call myself an educator and a simulationist today, it is because of my experiences at this place with these people. I feel proud knowing that I will be walking into residency with the mind and heart of a groomed educator and will hopefully contribute to the culture of teaching and learning.
Over the last few days, I have been overwhelmed - in the best way - by the outpouring of messages and calls from those celebrating this milestone with me. From my closest friends and family, medical school colleagues, seniors and juniors, people from my hometown, and all the way from my future co-residents - thank you for sharing in my celebration. It means the world to me.
Most special were the messages from ‘familiar’ strangers, people I only crossed paths with briefly, who took the time to share their happiness and acknowledge the hard work it took to get here. Their joy reminds me why the healthcare community is so special - we celebrate each other’s wins with genuine joy as if they were our own. It’s a privilege to be part of this community.
As I celebrate, I am also aware that this will be a very crucial and defining year for me. I look forward to learning, growing and working hard as I take this next step towards becoming the surgeon I aspire to be.
Will close this by turning to my co-residents: We made it here, and we’ll make it through what’s next, too. One step, one day at a time. Let’s work hard, together!
