  • INSGC proudly presents an experience shared by one of our students. By: Derek Thach With the funding provided by INSGC, I wanted to experience more in person events at NASA since my entire internship was virtual. I utilized this money to book a flight to Florida and experience a few days working in the office with the rest of the PX-A team while being escorted by Felix. This experience was stunning as they took me around to various parts of the KSC campus including the Visitor Complex and executive offices. The team treated me extremely well and it was exciting to be able to present parts of my assignment to the team in the conference room. Another experience I got when traveling to the KSC office was watching my first rocket launch. The Delta IV rocket that launched on April 9th, 2024 was fascinating to watch in person and I grinned as I felt the room around me rumble and shake to the rocket lifting off the ground. Being surrounded by people at NASA that were so passionate about their work was inspiring to me. I haven’t experienced a lot of working environments that provide spaces for employees to explore their passions and NASA was able to provide that at KSC. I was extremely proud to say that I got to see my team in person and experienced this past semester becoming closer as a team and as a little family away from home.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — For the fourth time in five years, a team of Trine University student engineers has earned recognition at NASA’s annual Human Exploration Rover Challenge competition. The Trine team of design engineering technology seniors received the STEM Engagement Award in the College/University division. The award is presented by NASA to one team in each division for inspiring others in its community and local schools to pursue the study of engineering design and other STEM topics. In addition, Trine’s rover qualified for a place in the standings for the second year in a row. Trine finished 12th out of 29 college and university teams with a run time of 5:52. Team members RJ Anderson of Kendallville, Morgan Hinderliter, of Shelbyville, Emma Oslakovich of Coal City, Illinois, Grant Pickard of Wilmington, Ohio, Adrienne Rosey of Schoolcraft, Michigan, and Chris Schuman of Bangor, Michigan, traveled to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, from April 18-20 for the competition.

During the solar eclipse on April 8th at the Indy Motor Speedway, we had a large presence of visually impaired students and adults. This was planned as we engaged them in high weather balloon launches and the opportunity to feel the Eclipse as it happen. (Reach out if you want to learn more.) But there was so much more. I cannot say enough about #AscensionProtectiveServices for passing their white gloves over so my friend could feel the amazing Borg Warner Championship Drivers Trophey. He can now put the reflection of that trophy in his mind as he listens to the race. Thanks for inspiring Being inclusive to all so we all can learn.

The 2024 Solar Eclipse may be over but the work of continued collaborations and opportunity for all students to learn STEM education continues. It was an honor to put together the collaborations with Near Space Education, Tactile Engineering and the Indianapolis School for the Blind for a record breaking event. The visually impaired HS students from ISB made history in having to feel the solar eclipse as it was happening in real time as well as launch a weather balloon with research during the eclipse. As the data is being collected and analyzed, (video soon) I wanted to share a news clip from a few weeks before that explains more of the process. If you are wanting to learn how you can bring STEM to the visually impaired or would like to collaborate and expand STEM to K-12, reach out. I would love to talk. https://lnkd.in/gz2h-TFp
