The Indiana Public Defender Council is a state agency created by the General Assembly. The statutory duties of the Council are: 1. Assist in the coordination of the duties of the attorneys engaged in the defense of indigents at public expense; 2. Prepare manuals of procedure; 3. Assist in the preparation of trial briefs, forms, and instructions; 4. Conduct research and studies of interest or value to all such attorneys; and 5. Maintain liaison contact with study commissions, organizations, and agencies of all branches of local, state, and federal government that will benefit criminal defense as part of the fair administration of justice in Indiana.

On September 27th, the Indiana Public Defender Council is hosting John Tuell, Executive Director of the Robert F. Kenney National Resource Center for Juvenile Justice for a collaborative training on working with dual status youth. The training is open for all stakeholders interested in supporting and improving outcomes for youth who have suffered the trauma of child abuse or neglect, and have also become entwined in the juvenile justice system. Presenters include Damita Jefferson of Voices Corp., Rachel Vilensky of Child Advocates, Dr. Casey Pederson, Ph.D. HSPP, and many more. I'm excited to be a part of this upcoming training! Indiana implemented a dual status system, designed to improve outcomes for youth by adherence to a collaborative process almost a decade ago. Several of the original adopting judges have since retired, and its time to dig back in to ensure fidelity to the model that can support those most vulnerable in our justice system. Thanks to Rachel Vilensky Nichole Phillips Damita Jefferson, MSW John A. Tuell and others for stepping up to make this training a reality.
