#FeelGoodFriday -?A 65-year-old disabled veteran with PTSD failed to pay his property taxes. After the property was sold at tax sale, ILS attorney Dennis Frick filed objections in court before a new deed could be issued, arguing that our client needed an accommodation for his disability – an extension of the one-year redemption time. The tax sale purchaser agreed, and our client was able to keep his home. Reg DuValle of ILS’s Military Assistance Project bonded with the veteran client, helped find resources to pay the debt, and was key to the success of this representation. While these rights are protected today, laws can change often and quickly. If you are considering a legal name or gender marker change, now is the time to act. You just select the correct gender marker (M,F,X) and no medical or legal documents are needed. Your Passport gender marker does not need to match your ID or citizenship documents. We want to highlight those organizations by spotlighting their hard work. For November, we are highlighting Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS). Indiana Legal Services’ mission is to use the law to fight poverty and racism, empower clients, and increase access to justice. The Immigrants' and Language Rights Center (ILRC) team works to reach vulnerable and underserved immigrant and limited English proficient populations within Indiana. These populations have particular difficulties accessing legal services because of their language and cultural barriers. They may also have legal issues that are different than other legal service clients. ILRC works to reduce these barriers to services by employing different means to reach these groups and provide them with quality legal services. #KudosToTheTeam and our amazing network of pro bono volunteers who hosted the Naturalization Clinic last week!
