Gateway to the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico

关于我们

Founded in 1976 by the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (IPCC) is responsible for preserving and perpetuating Pueblo culture, and advancing understanding – by presenting with dignity and respect – the accomplishments and evolving history of the Pueblo people of New Mexico. It is located at the heart of nearly 80 acres of land owned by the 19 Pueblos and governed by the 19 Pueblos District. The non-profit Cultural Center is comprised of museum and gallery space, a collection of murals and other Native arts and artifacts, a library, archives, an education department, and cultural programming and events – each celebrating the Pueblo culture of New Mexico. IPCC is located within a cultural and business district (known as the IPCC Campus) in the heart of Albuquerque. The IPCC Campus is also home to a variety of commercial enterprises (also owned and operated by the 19 Pueblos), which include Pueblo Harvest restaurant, Indian Pueblo Store, event and meeting space, Starbucks at Avanyu Plaza, Four Winds convenience store, two hotels, and more. The mission of the IPCC Campus is to serve as gathering place where Pueblo culture is celebrated through creative and cultural experiences, while providing economic opportunities to Pueblo and local communities.

?? NM EDUCATORS! On Saturday, March 1st, I will be hosting an open and in-person Professional Development session from 9 AM to 12 PM on the Indigenous Wisdom Curriculum (IWC) at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Join me to learn about IWC and how-to implement a unit plan inside your classroom. This session will include an overview of the curriculum, presentations on 2 unit plans and opportunities to speak with the IW Lead Team on how to implement and modify lesson plans for your own students or to a different grade level. A unit plan to be presented this Saturday will include: “Urban Relocation and Its Impact on Pueblo People” by Valerie Siow. What started as an experimental program to relocate "employable" Navajos to major urban areas after World War II, soon expanded to include all Native Americans. This federal policy, implemented in 1952, is known as the Urban Indian Relocation Program. The premise of this initiative was to assimilate Native Americans to mainstream society. Under the Relocation Program, as it is often referred to, thousands of Native Americans moved away from their reservations to seek employment in urban areas. Numerous Pueblo People were attracted by this government initiative and uprooted their families, or started new families, in big cities such as Denver and Los Angeles. The outlook initially seemed good for Pueblo families, but as time progressed the consequences of urbanization were evident. This resulted in language loss and loss of connection to land and markers of cultural identity since those who moved away were not always able to go home. Unlike many tribes who were forcibly removed from their original homelands, Pueblo People have long inhabited the Southwest region of the United States. Their land base is inherently tied to their language and cultural practices. Additionally, at the core of Pueblo life are relationships, which are often multigenerational and clan based. The distance that separated urbanized Pueblo People from their communities impacted these strong language and cultural ties. In this unit students will learn about the Relocation Program and explore urbanization to understand how it impacted the Pueblo People of New Mexico. ? ?? About IWC: The Indigenous Wisdom Project has a rich history that dates back to 2012. The curriculum was completed in collaboration with educators, leaders, community organizers, and elders from the nineteen Pueblo Nations as a political project in response to the centennial of statehood for New Mexico. This Pueblo-based curriculum aims to strengthen the identity of Native American children in New Mexico by providing comprehensive K-12 unit plans for educators on the complex political, social, cultural, and economic history of the Pueblo nations of New Mexico.
