关于我们
Indian Natural Resources, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP) at Cal Poly Humboldt provides academic and research support services to first generation, low income, and historically underrepresented students in STEM disciplines with a focus on American Indian and Indigenous students. Through community based participatory research, we strive to work as partners with local tribal communities, learn through their Indigenous knowledge lenses, and contribute to each tribe’s respective goals. INRSEP affiliated programs: Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP), McNair Scholars Program, CIRM Bridges 3.0 Scholars Program, Geoscience Alliance, Native Food, Energy, and Water Systems (FEWS) Alliance, Ecological Forecasting Initiative, and AISES - American Indian Science and Engineering Society. We encourage and facilitate our students’ participation in SACNAS - the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, Research Experience for Undergraduates (REUs), and other research opportunities. We mentor students into careers, graduate programs, and (if eligible) fully-funded doctoral programs to improve STEM fields by empowering our students to become leaders who give back to their communities, society, and future generations while strengthening connections with their heritage and culture. Cal Poly Humboldt is a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and as a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI). Dr. Nievita Bueno Watts, Director Lonyx Landry (Nor Rel Muk Wintu Nation), Native Programs Coordinator (INRSEP) Dr. Rachel Torres, Ecological Forecasting Initiative Postdoctoral Scholar Nanette Durbin M. INRSEP is the November 2024 Awardee Highlight for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM). In 2000, the Indian Natural Resource, Science & Engineering Program (INRSEP) at Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly) won the Nation's highest honors for mentors who work with underrepresented groups to fully develop the Nation's human resources in STEM! The official biography below was current at the time of the award. See the organization's website for its latest information. Since its establishment in 1974, the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP) at Humboldt State University has trained about 40 percent of the nation's natural resource professionals of Native American descent. The underlying philosophy at INRSEP is to maintain a strong academic program which is intrinsically linked to Native American cultural perspectives. Services provided include academic advising and advocacy, personal and cultural counseling, tutorials, cooperative education and internships. Students are also provided guidance in balancing Western science with traditional holistic beliefs. Thirty-one INRSEP students graduated in the sciences over the past three years. The program currently enrolls 43 students from 27 tribal entities. https://paesmem.nsf.gov/ [ID: Photo depicting an award from the President of the United States and White House and an image of an awardee seal with depicting a trophy] #PAESMEM #TEK #Indigenousknowledge #naturalresources #stem #INRSEP
