The Indian Law Resource Center (ILRC) has begun its participation in the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. In meetings with the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous peoples and the UN Expert Mechanism, Indigenous leaders from Brazil and Argentina, alongside ILRC, presented the serious impacts of the "Time Frame/Marco Temporal" thesis in Brazil and lithium exploitation in Jujuy, Argentina, both carried out without the proper consent of the affected communities. These meetings highlight the urgent need to protect the territorial and human rights of Indigenous peoples. We are saddened by the recent passing of our dear friend, Dra. Cristiane Baré. Cris, a member of the Baré indigenous nation in Brazil, was a wonderful lawyer, a powerful advocate, and a great leader in Brazil's indigenous movement,?where she worked tirelessly to advance the rights of indigenous youth, to restore safety for indigenous women, and to secure indigenous lands. We are so proud to have known her and worked with her. We extend our sympathy to her family and community, and to all her colleagues at COIAB.
